Street SweepingPublic Works

Regular street sweeping occurs on about 80% of Santa Barbara’s 254 miles of paved streets within the Santa Barbara city limits. Sweeping frequency is tied to accumulation of debris, density of population, and usage, and is scheduled from as often as four times per week to twice a month. Residential neighborhoods are swept during the daytime and the commercial and arterial routes and downtown business areas are swept at night. The street sweepers annually remove approximately 1,850 tons of debris, trash, and other harmful constituents that would have otherwise ended up in the storm drains, creeks, and eventually in the ocean.  If your street or block is not in a regular sweeping program, it is probably because the street is too narrow or too steep for the street sweeper truck; nevertheless, if debris is a problem, please contact the Streets office or the Street Sweeping Hotline to request a special clean up.  To assist in efficient sweeping, please remove all vehicles and obstructions such as trash cans and leaf piles from the street in front of your house during your scheduled sweeping time.

Sweeping Cancelations

Rain and holidays are the two main reasons street sweeping may be canceled. The Street Sweeping Hotline at 897-1903 will announce all cancelations. Whenever sweeping is canceled, parking enforcement in the street sweeping no-parking zones is also canceled.  You can hear an announcement of daily sweeping status on the Street Sweeping Hotline at 897-1903. After a cancelation, the next sweep is on the next regularly scheduled day and time; there is no automatic schedule shift to the next day.

Holiday Sweeping Cancelations

A message will be placed on the Street Sweeping hotline announcing the scheduled holiday sweeping cancelation and reminding callers that parking enforcement in sweeping zones will be canceled on those days.  In 2014 street sweeping will be canceled on the following holidays:

January 1, 2014 Wednesday, New Year’s Day
January 20, 2014 Monday, Martin Luther King Day
February 17, 2014 Monday, Presidents Day
May 26, 2014 Monday, Memorial Day
July 4, 2014 Friday, Independence Day
September 1, 2014 Monday, Labor Day
November 27 and 28, 2014 Thursday, Thanksgiving Day and Friday, day after Thanksgiving
December 25, 2014 Thursday, Christmas Day

Rain Cancelations

Street sweeping is usually canceled when runoff fills the gutters. Steady rain, not just showers, is needed to warrant cancelation. Once the announcement of cancelation is made on the hotline, parking enforcement during the times posted in sweeping zones is canceled for the rest of that day. Please do not assume that any rain means automatic cancelation; check the street sweeping hotline at 897-1903 to be sure, and then park.
