I am pleased to announce the kick-off of the City's annual Charitable Giving Campaign, which will run from now through November 30. For many years, the City has offered employees the opportunity to support the organizations they care about through payroll deduction. Payroll deduction offers us a convenient and efficient way to make donations, and to report these tax-deductible donations at the end of the year.

The City coordinates its campaign with the United Way’s annual giving campaign. The United Way of Santa Barbara County offers funding for local non-profits and programming in education and literacy, financial independence, and health that complement and enhance our own professional efforts. You can designate your giving to the United Way
or to any other 501(c)(3) non-profit organization you wish.

Many of us watched in shock over the last several months as people all over the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the rest of the world faced tragedy and loss from hurricanes, earthquakes, and fires. This year, at the request of our Employee Philanthropy Committee, the United Way has agreed to waive collection and distribution fees for City employee donations designated to the American Red Cross and Direct Relief International to assist with their relief efforts.

Later this month, keep an eye out for the 2017 Basket Competition and Silent Auction. Each department is busy putting together a basket of goods and services to be auctioned off online. Prizes will be awarded to departments for the most money raised, for creativity, and for presentation. Last year’s auction raised more than $6,500 for our local United Way!
