May the Force Be With You in May at the Goleta Library
The library will be suitably decorated for the occasion and will have bibliographies of the library's Star Wars materials. Daily activities will be available and a month long scavenger hunt will afford the opportunity to win prizes.

Empty Mansions Discussion and Book Signing at the Central Library

Saturday Afternoon, May 10 at 2:00pm
Co-authors of the book, "Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune", as well as former Santa Barbara mayor Sheila Lodge, will discuss the bequest of the Clark Estate to the City of Santa Barbara, how it came to be and what is next. Volunteer Opportunities
Energetic teen and adult volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of the Santa Barbara Public Library System's Summer Reading Program. The 2014 program "Fizz, Boom, Read!" begins June 10 and runs through July 31. Adults and teens interested in welcoming families, explaining the program, enrolling participants, discussing books with children, awarding prizes, and assisting with weekly family events can sign up now!
 All interested volunteers are encouraged to contact their local library branch for branch-specific needs. Teen volunteers may use volunteer hours completed to fulfill high school community service requirements. Birds in Black & Blue - Ravens, Crows and Magpies at Solvang Library
Wednesday, May 21 at 6:00 pm
Father/daughter team of Dennis and Jessica Beebe will give a multimedia presentation about crows, jays, magpies and other corvids. This free program, appropriate for families with children ages 6 and up, is co-sponsored by the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society. The Beebe's will introduce each of these species and delve into some of the many reasons these birds are so interesting and beloved. Their presentation will include slides, videos, and bird study skins.

Edson Smith Photo Collection now Online!
The Public Library has a unique collection of black and white photos of Santa Barbara from 1895 - 1939, including old adobes and images of buildings after the 1925 earthquake. We have digitized some of them, which are available in our online catalogue. | |
