OPEN HOUSE AND RELEASE OF DRAFT COASTAL LAND USE PLAN

The public is invited to a Community Open House on Saturday November 11, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Chase Palm Park Center on the ocean side of Cabrillo Boulevard (236 East Cabrillo Boulevard).  The purpose of the Community Open House is to begin public review of the Draft Coastal Land Use Plan (LUP) that has been prepared as part of the City’s Local Coastal Program (LCP) Update. The Community Open House will include information about topics covered in the Draft Coastal LUP, providing an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about coastal planning and the review process.  There will be no formal presentation, the public is encouraged to drop in when it’s most convenient.

About The Draft Coastal LUP and LCP Update

The City’s Coastal LUP is being updated to modernize the existing 1981 Coastal LUP, building upon the 2011 General Plan to implement standards that clarify the coastal development review process. For the most part, the new Draft Coastal LUP carries forward policies that already exist in other City planning documents and regulations.  New policies document the criteria and interpretations already being used today for the review and approval of Coastal Development Permits, clarify development standards for complicated topics such as development near coastal bluffs and creeks, and address new and emerging issues for the City, such as sea level rise.  The Draft Coastal LUP demonstrates the City’s continued commitment to providing access for all to the beach, protection of the natural resources and the built environment, and appropriate uses of land including our vibrant waterfront, all of which make Santa Barbara so special.

The update to the Coastal LUP is part of a larger work effort to update the City’s Local Coastal Program.  In the coming years, this will include development of a Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan and Lower-Cost Visitor-Serving Accommodations Study

Public Comments

The public review period for the Draft Coastal LUP will be from November 11, 2017 to January 11, 2018.  The public is encouraged to stay informed and provide comments on the Draft Coastal LUP at www.SantaBarbaraCA.gov/LCP.  Comments can be submitted in a form available on the website, sent via email to LCPUpdate@santabarbaraca.gov, or mailed to the City of Santa Barbara Planning Division Attn:  LCP Update at P.O. Box 1990, Santa Barbara, CA 93102.  Comments received will be forwarded to the Planning Commission for consideration at a public hearing on the document to be held in spring 2018.
