May the Force Be With You in May at the Goleta Library

Star Wars fingerpuppets
The library will be suitably decorated for the occasion and will have bibliographies of the library's Star Wars materials. Daily activities will be available and a month long scavenger hunt will afford the opportunity to win prizes.

Empty Mansions Discussion and Book Signing at the Central Library


Saturday Afternoon, May 10 at 2:00pm

Co-authors of the book, "Empty Mansions: The Mysterious Life of Huguette Clark and the Spending of a Great American Fortune", as well as former Santa Barbara mayor Sheila Lodge, will discuss the bequest of the Clark Estate to the City of Santa Barbara, how it came to be and what is next. The discussion will be facilitated by Scott London. For more info, click here.

Volunteer Opportunities

Energetic teen and adult volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of the Santa Barbara Public Library System's Summer Reading Program. The 2014 program "Fizz, Boom, Read!" begins June 10 and runs through July 31. Adults and teens interested in welcoming families, explaining the program, enrolling participants, discussing books with children, awarding prizes, and assisting with weekly family events can sign up now!
Homework HelpAll interested volunteers are encouraged to contact their local library branch for branch-specific needs. Teen volunteers may use volunteer hours completed to fulfill high school community service requirements. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and entering ninth grade or higher to be eligible for this opportunity.

Building a College List at Goleta Library
Monday, May 5, 6 -7:30pm


Find out how to identify colleges that offer the strongest programs for specific interests and passions. Counselors will introduce tools to create and refine a college list that is right for you.

  • Learn to differentiate among programs and identify strong departments
  • Compare art schools to liberal arts colleges with great art departments
  • Find out which schools are the most generous with merit aid
  • Identify which schools are the most supportive of students with learning disabilities
  • Learn how to estimate your chances for financial aid at public vs. private schools
  • Learn where to start and how to use available resources to find great college options

Pulitzer Prize Winners 2014

Birds in Black & Blue - Ravens, Crows and Magpies at Solvang Library

Wednesday, May 21 at 6:00 pm

Father/daughter team of Dennis and Jessica Beebe will give a multimedia presentation about crows, jays, magpies and other corvids. This free program, appropriate for families with children ages 6 and up, is co-sponsored by the Santa Ynez Valley Natural History Society.raven_flight.jpg
The Beebe's will introduce each of these species and delve into some of the many reasons these birds are so interesting and beloved. Their presentation will include slides, videos, and bird study skins.

Mother's Day Crafts at Eastside and Goleta Libraries

Crafts, cards and art projects at the Eastside and Goleta Libraries. At Eastside Library on Saturday, May 10 at 12:00pm, there will be card making and crafts for all ages. At Goleta Library on Sunday, May 11 at 1:30pm, there will be an art project best for children ages 7 - 10.

Edson Smith Photo Collection now Online!

The Public Library has a unique collection of black and white photos of Santa Barbara from 1895 - 1939, including old adobes and images of buildings after the 1925 earthquake. We have digitized some of them, which are available in our online catalogue.

Comic Book Swap at Goleta Library

The library will provide a wide range of comic books and graphic novels that will be available to swap. Participants are encouraged to bring their own comic books and graphic novels to trade. Free Comic Book Day is held on the first Saturday in May each year.

Composting Workshop at Solvang Library

Always wanted to compost, but never knew exactly how it worked, or thought your home doesn't have space for it? Wondered about worm composting? You've come to the right place! Open to gardeners and non-gardeners alike.

Apps for Parents and Children at Montecito Library

Montecito Library is hosting two workshops to demonstrate wonderful, free apps. The first workshop on Thursday, May 8 at 3:30pm will show apps that teach the concept of money, saving and "good cents". The workshop on Thursday, May 15, at 3:30pm will demonstrate how smart devices are an excellent learning environment to explore the multisensory wonders of art and music.
