City Receives American Society of Civil Engineers Awards

February 24, 2014 
Every year, as part of National Engineers Week, the local Santa Barbara/Ventura Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers, ASCE, selects a Project of the Year and Sustainable Project of the Year. This year, the City of Santa Barbara received an award in each category for the Cater Water Treatment Plant Advanced Treatment (Ozone) Project and the Fats, Oils, & Grease (Fog) Pilot Program, respectively.

Fire Department Donates Engine

December 17, 2013 
The City has donated a retired fire engine to Allan Hancock College. Over 50% of firefighters currently employed by the City are graduates of the Allan Hancock Fire Academy, and many have served as instructors.

Pedestrian Safety Patrols

December 3, 2013 
In response to resident concerns, the City recently conducted pedestrian crosswalk patrols at multiple locations. A total of seventy citations were issued to drivers.

Interim Public Works Director Appointed

Rebecca Bjork has been appointed to serve as the Interim Public Works Director to oversee the City’s transportation system, water and wastewater facilities, and City-owned buildings and fleet.

Oak Park Permeable Paver Update

October 21, 2013 
Construction at the north parking lot is complete, and the lot is now open. Construction at the south parking lot and stage area is scheduled to be completed in November, and the picnic area is expected to be complete in mid-December.

De La Vina Safety Improvements Completed

August 13, 2013 
The City recently completed pedestrian safety improvements at the busy intersection of De La Vina and Figueroa Streets. New street lights were installed and curb extensions and new access ramps were constructed at all four corners.

Police Officers Honored for Performance

May 29, 2013 
Officers Keld Hove and Douglas Klug recently received the Santa Barbara Citizens Council on Crime Award for Superior Performance. The officers received the honor as a part of the annual H. Thomas Guerry Awards.

City Wins Two Planning Awards

May 23, 2013 

The Central Coast chapter of the American Planning Association awarded the City's General Plan an Award of Excellence for Comprehensive Planning, focusing on the Sustainability Framework and Land Use Element. The General Plan was also selected as the Jurors Choice. The City's Climate Action Plan received an Award of Merit for Innovation in Green Community Planning.
