Hi, my name is Jim Scafide and I’m running for City Council in Santa Barbara’s Fourth District because I want to forge a future in which Santa Barbara is again the leader in environmental protection, safeguarding and expanding our parks and open spaces, and defending our air, water, coastline, and natural resources from the threats coming from Washington.
I’m a lawyer, the owner of a State Street business, and an adjunct professor at the Santa Barbara College of Law.
As the only candidate in this race endorsed by the Santa Barbara County Democratic Party, the Democratic Women of Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, and the UCSB Campus Democrats, I want to work with you to create a sustainable Santa Barbara, with an inclusive City Government that is transparent and accountable, and seeks equality while serving your interests—not special interests.
I believe we must do more in fostering opportunities for housing for working families converting vacant buildings in our downtown - like the former Macy’s building—into mixed-commercial and residential uses. Our downtown would flourish from the location of this environmentally-sound and water-efficient housing. And we must invest in alternative transportation including funding of the Bicycle Master Plan.
But we must also create economic opportunities. I would continue to work with business leaders in diversifying our local economy and creating environmentally-sound jobs paying wages that allow people to live in Santa Barbara. Currently it is estimated that between 20 and 30 thousand people per day commute in and out of our city, taxing our roads, creating congestion and pollution.
Santa Barbara is best served where people have the opportunity to live and work in our city.
But we cannot forget that what makes Santa Barbara such a special place to live is our neighborhoods, and the Fourth District is no different, from San Roque to the Upper East, to Mission Canyon, the Riviera, Sycamore Canyon and Montecito. I pledge to preserve our unique neighborhoods, our parks and playgrounds, and our scenic vistas.
I am the candidate of change in the Fourth District. As a former Mayor and member of City Council of an Ohio city, I understand the inner workings of municipal government, and know what it takes to move Santa Barbara in a new and progressive direction. I ask you to join with me in charting a new course for Santa Barbara, leading to a brighter future for all of us. Please go to Scafide4sb.org for more information.
I ask for your support and your vote.
