I’m Angel Martinez and I believe Santa Barbara should be the best small city in America.
We have everything we need here: natural beauty, climate, and a community of caring and talented individuals who I believe share the same concerns.
But our city is going in the wrong direction. And the politicians in City Hall keep pushing failed policies that put our future at risk.
The old ways won’t work anymore. It’s time for new leadership and a new vision for Santa Barbara.
I tell my kids, “What got you here, won’t get you there.”
And what got us here has created the wonderful place we all call home… but we must do better.
I’m running for mayor because we need new ideas to get us where we want to go.
However, over the past many years we have continued to elect the same types of people hoping for a different outcome.
The economic reality in which we live should be no surprise to anyone. We’ve failed to look forward and develop a vision of what we are leaving our future generations.
Because of that, we have relied on a one-dimensional, tourist based economy.
One with low-paying jobs and no chance for upward mobility.
Our children are forced to move away.
Now State Street has over 50 storefront vacancies and other parts of town are suffering.
Aggressive transient panhandlers have dominated our public spaces.
In the 15 years I’ve lived here, I’ve had the opportunity to raise a family and see first hand the challenges we face.
My time serving on a variety of non-profits including:
has shown me the tremendous needs of our community as well as the wealth of talent, amazing individuals and, untapped resources we have.
I’m optimistic, by working together, we can move Santa Barbara forward.
As the former CEO of Deckers Brands, the makers of UGG boots, Teva, and Hoka,
I’ve been responsible for the success and welfare of hundreds of local employees. Many of them your friends and neighbors.
With over 40 years in business, I’ve created thousands of jobs.
I know how to manage complex organizations like the City of Santa Barbara and bring people together to solve complex problems.
Together we can revitalize downtown, and keep our local economy vibrant so our kids can live here, work here, and raise the next generation of Santa Barbarians.
If you agree with me that the current politicians and the status quo simply don’t meet the challenges we face today and that Santa Barbara needs new direction, new policies, and new leadership – I ask for your vote for Mayor.
