Gregg Hart

Meet Gregg Hart

Candidate Video Statement

Hello. I’m Gregg Hart and I’m running for re-election to continue to work for you, my District 6 neighbors, as your City Councilmember.

I’ve had the privilege of calling Santa Barbara “home” my whole life. My mother still lives in the house I grew up in on the Westside.

I attended local schools and graduated from Santa Barbara City College and UCSB. I raised my family here in Santa Barbara and for twenty years owned and operated a local, small business.

I have represented Santa Barbara residents as a Planning Commissioner, City Councilmember, and California State Coastal Commissioner.

In each capacity, I’ve worked collaboratively with diverse stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that help move our city and region forward.

To protect our environment, I led the Council to adopt one of the most ambitious renewable energy goals in the nation.

I’m opposed to outdated oil production practices that endanger our coastline and future. I led the community effort to provide funding to clean our beaches and creeks and preserve open space.

As Chair of the City Council’s Finance Committee, I insisted the Council fully fund its budget reserves. I will continue to prudently allocate revenue, while carefully investing in programs that improve the quality of life for all residents.

Everyone knows how important State Street is to our community.

I serve as the City Council representative to the Police and Fire Departments and to the Downtown Organization. Our police officers, local business owners, and community leaders are working together to ensure a safe and welcoming experience downtown.

I support streamlining the City permit process so local businesses can quickly fill vacancies. I voted to increase the number of officers in the Police department and to put more officers on State Street.

In order for local businesses to succeed, the City must help increase housing options affordable to local workers. As a Planning Commissioner and Councilmember, I’ve consistently championed careful development of new housing, while preserving our neighborhoods. Homes and apartments should be preserved for local residents not rented to visitors as hotels.

To address increasing traffic congestion, I support widening the 101 freeway and starting new commuter rail service connecting Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. I will continue to advocate for building new, safe bike paths and promoting sustainable transportation.

Santa Barbara is recognized as a world-class community. Working together, we can make it an even better place to live, work and visit.

I am proud to be endorsed by many community leaders, the Democratic Party, the Sierra Club, and Planned Parenthood. I would be honored to have your support on November 7.
