Santa Barbara Cruise Ship Program

The City of Santa Barbara Waterfront Department is taking steps to become an official ambassador of the Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program, a collaborative effort dedicated to protecting endangered whales, improving coastal air quality, and promoting a quieter, healthier ocean environment. This program brings together a wide network of respected partners, including the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation, national marine sanctuaries, regional air pollution control districts, and research institutions such as the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory. Beginning in 2026, cruise lines join other major vessel types as eligible participants in this voluntary, science-based initiative.

As we move forward in this process, we are excited to strengthen our partnership with the program and support its mission. The Blue Whales and Blue Skies Program aligns closely with the City’s longstanding request for cruise ships visiting Santa Barbara to reduce speeds when transiting the Santa Barbara Channel. Similar voluntary Vessel Speed Reduction efforts along the California coast help safeguard marine life during peak whale season and improve air quality during smog season. Each year, the program verifies cooperation, measures environmental benefits, and recognizes industry leaders making meaningful progress. We look forward to advancing this partnership as part of our broader efforts to promote environmental stewardship while maintaining a balanced, sustainable cruise ship program for Santa Barbara.
