Westside Bike Boulevard Gap Closure Project
Why this Project?
The Westside neighborhood of Santa Barbara has a propensity for walking and biking - yet it needs connections to make active transportation safe and easy. In the Project study area, between 2011 and 2015, 35 people were injured walking or biking, including one fatality.
The neighborhood lacks bike facilities and a safe and efficient crosstown connection. As a result, cyclists bike along busy Micheltorena Street, where they must share the road with traffic. Micheltorena carries over 6,800 vehicles per day. Although the Project is intended to create a safe, efficient cycling route, pedestrians will also benefit from traffic control changes, with new traffic signals near Downtown creating safer crossings.
The Westside Bike Boulevard Gap Closure Project emerged from several neighborhood summits and the Bicycle Master Plan (2016), and is in line with the City's Vision Zero Strategy (2018). The Project will establish safe and efficient connections from the Westside to schools, parks, and Downtown. It will also create a connected crosstown bike network by connecting to the Eastside Green Lanes and Bike Boulevard Gap Closure Project. A new video introduces the Eastside/Westside Connects projects, highlighting how the proposed bike boulevards make safer routes for cyclists and safer routes to school, and create connectivity throughout the City.
To identify walking, biking, and driving safety concerns in Santa Barbara’s Westside and Lower West Neighborhoods, City Public Works held a Listening Workshop on April 6, 2019. The gathering was held at Harding Elementary, with residents and interested parties discussing areas of concern within their neighborhoods.
