What is this Project?

The City of Santa Barbara, County of Santa Barbara, and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments have partnered on the Olive Mill Roundabout Project to create a new intersection configuration to enhance traffic operations and safety for motor vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. The Project will complement the proposed improvements included in the north segment of the U.S. Highway 101 High Occupancy Vehicle lanes project.

Where is the Project located?

The Project is located on Olive Mill Road at the intersection of Coast Village Road and North Jameson Lane.

What are the benefits of this Project?

The Project enhances traffic operations and safety for motor vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians, reduces traffic congestion, and improves mobility at the Olive Mill Road intersection.

What is the Project Status?

The Project is currently in the preliminary design and development phase, and is undergoing the environmental review process.

How is this Project funded?

The Project is funded through Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) State Transportation Improvement Program funds through the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments.

When will this Project be constructed?

The Project will be constructed with funding from the Regional Surface Transportation Program (RSTP). Federal gas tax dollars are apportioned to states for roads, transit, non-motorized and other transportation needs. In California, these funds are administered by Caltrans. In turn, Caltrans assigns a portion of the RSTP funds to regional transportation agencies. Under these funds, the exchange of federal RSTP funds for state cash is allowed freeing projects from federal requirements. The timing on release of this funding is currently not known and thus, a construction start date has not been identified.

Join Us This Thursday Virtually at Planning Commission to Discuss the Olive Mill Roundabout Project

This Thursday, August 20 at 9:00 a.m., the Olive Mill Roundabout Project is being heard at a joint hearing meeting of the Montecito Planning Commission and City Planning Commission. The project consists of reconfiguring the six-legged intersection at Olive Mill Road, Coast Village Road, Jameson Lane, Highway (HWY) 101 northbound off-ramp, and HWY 101 southbound on-ramp to a single lane roundabout. The approaches to the intersection at each of the legs would be modified to include new road curvature (to slow traffic), pedestrian refuge islands, sidewalks, street lighting, signage, crosswalks, landscaping, and drainage facilities.
