Street Tree ManagementParks

Co-designated City Official Tree
Quercus agrifolia, Coast Live Oak

Forestry staff plant and care for approximately 33,000 street trees of various species and sizes. Our well-trained crew performs pruning, removal of dead and hazardous trees, planting and watering of trees, and emergency tree operations.

Street Tree maintenance is guided by Municipal Code Chapter 15.20, Santa Barbara’s Tree Planting and Maintenance Ordinance, and the Street Tree Master Plan (STMP). Chapter 15.20 required a comprehensive plan for planting and maintaining trees along streets and in public areas, and established general elements to be included in the plan. The Street Tree Master Plan (STMP) was adopted by City Council in 1977.

The Plan is used on a regular basis to:

  • Provide a planting/replanting “master list” for the City.
  • Clarify and establish approved street tree species by street segments.
  • Assess tree planting options and maintain the
  • City’s street tree diversity.
  • Provide a formalized guide to City staff and the community on approved tree species.
