The City of Santa Barbara’s Parks and Recreation department is offering a new summer camp for developmentally disabled youth as part of its Adapted Recreation Program. The Independent Living Skills (ILS) Boot Camp, a partnership between the Parks and Recreation Department and Reid’s Gift, is aimed at young people ages 14-22, and will consist of week-long sessions beginning on June 22.
The experienced ILS Boot Camp staff use evidence-based practices to teach meaningful skills in community settings, including safety, money management, social skills, successful use of public transportation, recreation pursuits, cooking, and more.
“We’re very excited about the City’s partnership with Reid’s Gift—a great organization whose mission is to support high-quality lives for individuals with developmental disabilities,” said Julie Thomas, head of the Parks and Recreation Department’s Adapted Recreation Program. “Participants will have the opportunity to learn so many vital life skills while having tons of fun with friends.”
The fee for each session of ILS Boot Camp is $250, though needs-based scholarships are available. Many thanks to our granting organizations, UCSB’s Associated Students and their Community Volunteer Foundation.
