Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Harriet Miller Youth Leadership Awards Scholarship, the City of Santa Barbara and the Downtown Organization announced today. The scholarship, established in honor of former Santa Barbara mayor Harriet Miller, awards $500 to one outstanding local high school senior, in recognition of achievements in leadership and community service.
Once applications are received, a selection committee of representatives from Santa Barbara youth leadership groups and the Downtown Organization will review them and choose this year’s worthy recipient. The winner will receive the award and scholarship check at at the Downtown Organization’s Annual Breakfast, which will be held at El Paseo Restaurant on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
To apply, you must be student in the Santa Barbara Unified School District, or a resident of Santa Barbara, with a minimum grade point average of 2.5, and you must have completed 45 hours of community service by the application deadline of February 16, 2018.

You’ll be asked to write a short essay on a current national or community issue; this year’s topic has to do with social change movements and their promotion via social media hashtags. Then, return your application to Susan Young at the City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department at the address below, either by mail or in person.
