Santa Barbara, California, May 16, 2016—The City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that it has installed new playground equipment at Bohnett Park, which will be available for public use beginning today. The all-new playground structure and surrounding area will be open for children and families to enjoy this afternoon Monday, May 16, 2016.
“Bohnett Park is one of our key neighborhood parks on the Westside, and it sees a lot of use,” said Parks Manager Santos Escobar. “We’re glad we’re able to replace this playground for the local residents. Giving kids safe and fun places to play is important to us.”
The new playground at Bohnett Park serves the same age group as the old playground: five-year-olds to 12-year-olds. The new equipment does include a bay of bucket swings for two- to five-year-olds, so younger children can join in the fun. The playground features a main play structure, a climber, and two bays of swings. The entire playground area is surfaced with pour-in-place rubber with a colorful path design. The playground equipment at Bohnett Park was last replaced in 2006, in keeping with the roughly ten-year replacement cycle for City playgrounds.
In addition to the new playground equipment, recent improvements to Bohnett Park include a reconfigured the playground area, constructing a new walkway in front of the playground, and relocation of picnic tables. These changes allow for park access and field improvements to be designed in the future, and provide space for the addition of an adult fitness area. The vast majority of the playground replacement costs were provided by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding.
As the new Bohnett Park playground reopens, another Parks and Recreation Department improvement project will begin: the grassy area of the park will be closed off for soil conditioning and reseeding of grass. We ask the public to bear with us as we complete this important turf improvement project, which will result in hardier grassy areas that will be able to withstand heavier use in the future. If you have any questions about this or any other aspect of our Bohnett Park improvements, please contact Department staff. Parks Manager Santos Escobar’s contact information is listed below.
