Getting a Library Card

All Library Cards

  • Patrons must be present to obtain a library card, with the exception of Homebound patrons and for eCards.
    •  Patrons who are Homebound may have a representative apply for a library card on their behalf with their government-issued photo identification and a doctor's note.
  • Patrons may apply in person or register online for an eCard
  • The first library card is issued free of charge; all physical cards are subject to the associated replacement fee.

eCard (for ages 13 & Up)

The Library has recently upgraded its eCard authentication. If your eCard that started with PACREG no longer works, please register here for a new permanent one.

  • An eCard will only give you access to some of our digital audiobooks, eBooks, and online learning resources including: OverDrive, hoopla, Kanopy, Enki, RBDigital, and Mango Languages.
  • Online applicants can apply for a Library eCard from home. Registrants will be issued an eCard instantly.
  • To receive an SBPL eCard, registrants must provide an address in the Santa Barbara Public Library service area.
  • Fill out the online eCard application here.
  • eCards are considered permanent cards, but you may also obtain a library card with full borrowing privileges to physical materials as well, which requires validation with a valid, government-issued photo ID and proof of your mailing address in California.
  • Please be aware that if you change your eCard to a regular library card and you use OverDrive, you will need to merge your accounts to retain access to your holds and borrowed items. To merge your accounts, contact Overdrive via their support form with both card numbers. If you do not have both card numbers, contact Library Staff.
