The Santa Barbara Public Library is inviting local authors, writers, publishers, and researchers to submit proposals for virtual workshops for SBPL’s Local Author Days in late January 2021.
Local Author Day is the Santa Barbara Public Library’s annual community event that looks to support the local writing community and increase community awareness of local author contributions in Santa Barbara. The 2021 Local Author Days will offer two workshops to take place over two weekends. These will be virtual workshops open to all community members.
The Library is seeking individuals to propose interactive virtual workshops for local authors. Santa Barbara Public Library will pick one workshop on the craft of writing (plotting your story, research for writing (fiction or non-fiction), character development, etc.) and one workshop on the business of writing (creating an elevator pitch, working with publishers, how to navigate getting an agent, etc.). The workshops must be interactive and have a learning outcome and/or goal of a finished product.
ELIGIBILITY: This project is open to all individuals at least 18 years of age, working and/or residing in Santa Barbara County. Individuals / teams may submit more than one workshop proposal, but will only be eligible to present one workshop during the program. As all workshops will be held on Zoom, selected individuals / teams must have access to the resources to facilitate their workshop virtually (see Submission Guidelines for more details).
LOGISTICS: The workshops will take place on Saturday, January 30 and Saturday, February 6. Time to be decided. Each workshop session should plan to be two hours each, for a total of four hours per workshop. The proposed workshop should accommodate a minimum of 25 people.
BUDGET: Selected individuals will receive an honorarium of $500 per workshop. If there is more than one presenter for the workshop proposal there will not be additional funds allotted.
Proposals should come from individuals living and working in Santa Barbara County, and proposals from those working in the Santa Barbara Public Library’s service area will be given priority in the selection process.
All workshops will need to be held virtually in January/February 2021. SBPL will host the workshops via Zoom call, and workshop leaders will need to have access to a computer, camera, and microphone, and be comfortable facilitating the workshop remotely.
The proposed workshops must have clear interactive components, ideally between participants and leaders as well as among participants. There should be an identified learning outcome and/or goal for a finished product.
Workshops may include asynchronous work between the two in-person virtual meetings.
If necessary, submitters may be asked to do a short virtual interview with SBPL staff.
Individuals need not have any teaching experience to submit a proposal.
Workshops will be selected by a panel of SBPL staff. The panel’s decisions will be announced by December 19, 2020.
