Library Card Design Contest

Calling all artists! What does the library card mean to you? Enter the 2019 Library Card Design Contest for a chance to have your artwork featured on a limited edition SBPL library card. 

Rules for entry

  1. One entry per contestant

  2. All photos and/or illustrations must be original works

  3. The Santa Barbara Public Library reserves the right to reproduce your work

  4. The deadline for submission is 7 pm on September 23, 2019. 

Design specifications

Designs can be horizontal or vertical

Designs must incorporate reading and/or libraries

Words and numbers can only be incorporated as graphic elements

Submissions with incorrect spelling, grammar, or copyrighted images will be disqualified

Submissions may be any medium (illustration, pen, photography, etc.)

Computer generated images are acceptable as long as they are original (no clip art)

Digital submissions should be 1050 x 639 pixels with a resolution of 300 dpi or higher

Do not include your name within the border of the image

Selection process

Representatives from Santa Barbara Public Library will select the top designs in each of 3 age categories

Youth (12 and under)

Teen (12-17) 

Adult (over 18)

Finalists will be selected at the Library’s discretion. If a submission received in a category is not deemed suitable, the Library may choose not to submit it as a finalist.

A committee of representatives from the Library Board, Friends of the Library, Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation, and City Council will determine the winners in each age category. One winning design will be selected by public vote.

Public voting will take place September 25-27 on social media,the Library’s website, and at all SBPL locations.

Library cards with the winning designs will be available to the public after they are produced (fall 2019).

Winners will have the opportunity for a private Escape Room or Makerspace event for themselves and up to 5 friends. 

All entries must be submitted to the Santa Barbara Public Library or scanned and emailed to with your name, age, and phone number. Submission implies full release all rights to the submitted artwork.
