FAQ on Santa Ynez Libraries Transition

Q. What is happening to the Buellton, Solvang, Los Olivos, and Santa Ynez Branch Libraries?

A. Currently, these Libraries are operated as branches of the Santa Barbara Public Library by the City of Santa Barbara. Library operations are being transferred to the City of Goleta, and on July 1, 2019, the branches will be part of the Goleta Valley Public Library System.

Q. How will this impact me?

A. If you are at Santa Barbara Public Library patron currently registered to the Buellton, Solvang, Los Olivos, or Santa Ynez branch libraries, you will need to visit your library to update your account and receive a new free Goleta Valley Public Library Card.

Q. Do I have to get a Goleta Valley Public Library Card?

A. If you live in Buellton, Solvang, or the surrounding areas, it is recommended.

Q. Will this impact what materials I will have access to?

A. As a member of the Black Gold cooperative, you will still have access to the full physical materials collection.  Each jurisdiction within Black Gold provides access to separate online content.  You will need to check with the Goleta Valley Public Library for information on digital resources.

Q. I want to keep my SBPL card.  What do I need to know?

A.  You are welcome to stay an SBPL cardholder.  It is our policy that if you are an SBPL cardholder you must pick up all holds at an SBPL location (see below for list).  Therefore, if you are an SBPL cardholder after June 30, 2019 you will not be able to pick up holds at the Buellton, Solvang, Los Olivos, or Santa Ynez libraries.

Q. Where can I get a Goleta Valley Public Library Card?

A. You may get a Goleta Valley Public Library Card at the Goleta Library, or at the Buellton or Solvang branch libraries.

The Buellton Library is located at:

Buellton Library, 140 West Highway 246, Buellton

The Solvang Library is located at:

Central Library, 40 East Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara

Montecito Library, 1469 East Valley Rd., Montecito

Q. Can I replace my card online or over the phone?

A. You must replace your library card in person.

Q. Do I need to bring anything with me to replace my card?

A. You will need to confirm your identity. Please bring a picture ID.

Q. Do I need to have my old card with me to have it replaced?

A. No, but your old card must be destroyed as it will no longer work.

Q. May I replace someone else’s card for them?

You may not replace a card for another adult. Parents who are authorized on their children’s accounts may replace cards for their children.

Q. How do I update my card if I use the library’s digital resources?

A. If you are a user of the library’s Black Gold app, you can log out of the app, and re-sign in as a Goleta library patron with your new Goleta Valley Library card number, or delete and reinstall the app. If you are an Overdrive user, you can follow these instructions on contacting Overdrive support to modify your card number.
