Adults Can Choose Adventure at the Santa Barbara Public Library This Summer

When thinking of summer reading programs, it could be forgiven if one thinks only of young children whizzing through books to win prizes at the local library. But the Santa Barbara Public Library is hoping to change that perception this summer with challenges, events, and reading programs for all ages.

The importance of reading goes beyond keeping one's brain sharp, it has also been shown to help reduce stress and increase empathy. Books are also an avenue for exploration and communication that can bring people together. As an organization promoting lifelong learning and literacy, the Santa Barbara Public Library is excited to invite the community to participate in all they have to offer this summer and to discover (or rediscover!) a love of reading.

While adults are encouraged to Choose Adventure and sign-up for the Summer Reading Program, via which they can earn prize entries for each book they read, they are also encouraged to attend events, join a book club, engage with the community, contact old friends, and more. To kick-off everything Adult Summer Reading, the Santa Barbara Public Library is hosting a party at Wine Therapy (732 State St.) from 6:30 - 8:30 PM on Wednesday, June 6th. There will be Blind Date With a Book, postcard writing on vintage typewriters, personalized book recommendations, and general book and reading geekery.

Special events continue for adults throughout the summer. From writing workshops to explorative panel discussions to escape rooms and murder mystery parties, the Santa Barbara Public Library has something for everyone.

For more information and to see all Summer Reading programs and sign-up, visit the Santa Barbara Public Library's website and/or sign-up for the SBPL newsletter in English or Spanish
