Adult Literacy Services

Free One-to-One Tutoring for Adults

SBPL offers one-on-one tutoring for adult who want help:

  • Improving reading, writing, and spelling skills in English or Spanish
  • Improving their ability to speak and understand English
  • Working towards a General Education Diploma
  • Studying to become a US citizen

SBPL’s Adult Literacy Program will match you with a trained tutor to help you reach your goals.

You are eligible to join our program if you are:

  • Age 16 or older
  • Available 2-3 hours a week for tutoring
  • Will be staying in the Santa Barbara area for at least 6 months

Participating in the Adult Literacy program, you will:

  • Get free and confidential tutoring in reading, writing and spelling
  • Work one-on-one with a tutor to achieve your educational goals
  • Meet at a time and place convenient for both of you

Take the First Step. Schedule a New Learner Interview with SBPL Adult Education staff today!

In the New Learner interview, staff will:

  • Learn about you and your literacy goals
  • Answer any questions you have
  • Keep all information you share private and not share it with any other agency

The interview usually takes 30-45 minutes and can be done in-person in the SBPL’s Adult Education Center or virtually through Zoom.

SBPL Adult Education staff will follow up with you as soon as possible.

Spanish Literacy

If Spanish is your primary language and you would like to improve your ability to read, write, and spell in Spanish, one of our Spanish speaking tutors can help you reach your goals! 

SBPL staff can also get you started in our Leamos program online. This easy-to-use course helps Spanish-speaking adults learn to read and write in Spanish. Improved Spanish literacy can be your only goal, or a step towards English language learning.

Conversation Groups for English Language Learners

Practice English and make friends in the community at the same time!

Join our weekly English Conversation Group and practice your English in a relaxing and casual environment.

All English language learners are welcome! You do not need to be enrolled in the Adult Literacy program to participate.
