Popular Learning Resources 

Except where noted, library databases and resources are available at all Santa Barbara Public Library locations and accessible from home. A library card number is required when accessing these resources outside library locations.

LinkedIn Learning - (formerly Lynda.com) - Online courses, classes, training, and tutorials to learn software, creative, and business skills to achieve personal and professional goals. Join today to get access to thousands of courses. Login with your library card and PIN from anywhere and start learning.

LinkedIn Learning is made available to the community with support from the Santa Barbara Adult Education Consortium.

Mango Languages - Free, online language-learning in languages that include Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Arabic, Korean, Russian, Tagalog, Greek, Latin, and more. Mango has English language learning courses for speakers of 19 different languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian. Learn on the go with the Mango Mobile app for iPhone and Android. 

The New York Times – Free digital access is now available. Login daily for daily, unlimited access on all your devices.  Please note: you will be prompted for your library card number and to either create or log-in to a previously created New York Times (free) online account. Financial Directory Online Professional (onsite access in library buildings) - The most comprehensive and accurate resource on U.S. grantmakers and their funding activities.

Grants to Individuals (only available onsite in library buildings as of 6/9/21) - includes profiles of 10,000 grantmakers with details on funders that provide scholarships, fellowships, grants, and a wide range of financial support to individuals such as students.


Business Resources

Consumer Reports - A website that provides reviews and comparisons of consumer products and services based on product testing, market research, and its own product/service buying guides. Consumer Reports is available via EBSCO. Click on the "ConsumerReports.org" link after clicking on the link above (if you are not in a library location, you will need to also enter your library card number). 

ReferenceUSA - A market research tool with consumer directories and demographic information on millions of U.S. businesses and residents.

SizeUp - A business intelligence tool that provides industry competition, potential customer base, and location analytics.

ProQuest Homework Central - Includes these resources:

  • CultureGrams - offers unique, concise, and reliable cultural information, multimedia, and vital statistics on the countries of the world.
  • eLibrary - a massive collection of multidisciplinary periodical and digital media content for beginning and intermediate researchers.
  • History Study Center - over 2,000 years of world history from ancient times to the present day.
  • ProQuest Platform - makes hundreds of full text and abstract & index collections available, including Research Library and Historical Newspapers.
  • ProQuest Learning: Literature - delivers more than 180,000 searchable works of literature from medieval times to the present.
  • SIRS Discoverer - an editorially curated collection providing easy access to premium newspapers, magazines, images, and other kinds of content.

TuitionFundingSources.com (TFS) - A private website that contains the world's largest scholarship database. The TFS website also provides students with career and college admissions information. In order to register as a new member, click on the "login" button, then select your state and the school you currently attend and create a personal password.


Encyclopedias

Britannica Escolar - Descubra los artículos enciclopédicos, los recursos multimedia y otros materiales de aprendizaje que apoyan la investigación de los estudiantes y refuerzan la programación curricular. El acceso es provisto por la Biblioteca del Estado de California.

Britannica School Edition - Encyclopedia articles, multimedia, primary sources, education games and other learning resources that support student research. Access is provided by the California State Library.


Foundation Center

Literature

NoveList Plus - For help looking for your next good read, questions for your book club discussion, award winners, author read-alikes, and more. NoveList has over 25 librarians on staff, plus other contributing librarians, creating its content. If you are not in a library location, you will need to also enter your library card number to access it.

Teaching Books.net - A comprehensive resource of youth book lists and guides to award-winning and diverse literature, literature lesson plans, literature-based vocabulary lists, meet-the-author videos and book readings, readers' theatre scripts, and video book trailers. Access is provided by the California State Library.

Social Studies

Gale Archives Unbound - Presents topically-focused digital collections of historical documents that support the research and study needs of scholars and students at the college and university level. Collections in Archives Unbound cover a broad range of topics from the Middle Ages forward-from Witchcraft to World War II to twentieth-century political history. Collections are chosen for Archives Unbound based on requests from scholars, archivists, and students.

Toucan Valley Social Studies Fact Cards - Information designed for quick reference for students in grades 4 to 8. Covers the California, United States, and world topics included in the social studies curriculum in California.
