Except where noted, library databases and resources are available at all of the Santa Barbara Public Library System libraries and accessible from home. A library card number may be required for access.

Education & Careers 

Lynda.com - Online courses, classes, training, and tutorials to learn software, creative, and business skills to achieve personal and professional goals. Join today to get access to thousands of courses. Login with your library card and PIN from anywhere and start learning. 

TuitionFundingSources.com (TFS) - A private website that contains the world's largest scholarship database. The TFS website also provides students with career and college admissions information. In order to register as a new member, click on the "login" button, then select your state and the school you currently attend and create a personal password.

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedia Britannica Online - Find entries on a wide range of subjects, as well an updated world atlas, thousands of images and videos, an online dictionary and thesaurus, and articles from over 400 respected magazines and journals (For in-library use, click here).

Foundation Center

Foundation Directory Online Professional - The Santa Barbara Public Library is a Funding Information Network partner of the Foundation Center, providing access to a collection of materials and services related to grant seeking and fundraising. Includes information on 165,000+ foundations and corporate donors, and 16 million recent grants. Access available only at Central Library.


Foundation Grants to Individuals Online - An online database of foundation and public charity programs that fund students, artists, researchers, and other individual grantseekers. Access available only at Central Library.


Foundation Maps - The Foundation Center’s premier data visualization tool and the easiest way to see who is funding what and where around the world. Access available only at Central Library.

 

Scholarships For Change -  An interactive tool that provides access to: a current complete funding map of change-oriented scholarship funding efforts by private and community foundations, as available, grants data includes global grantmakers and recipients, and a searchable library of curated publications, case studies, affinity groups, news, and data on change-oriented scholarships. 

Wireless access to the Foundation Directory Online Professional, Foundation Grants to Individuals Online, and Foundation Maps is available at Central Library. 

Language Learning 

Mango Languages - Free, online language-learning in languages that include Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Arabic, Korean, Russian, Tagalog, Greek, Latin and more. Mango has English language courses for speakers of 19 different languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Russian. Learn on the go with the Mango Mobile app for iPhone and Android.

NoveList Reader's Guide to Fiction - For help looking for your next good read, questions for your book club discussion, award winners, author read-alikes, and more.

Teaching Books.net - A comprehensive resource of youth book lists and guides to award-winning and diverse literature, literature lesson plans, literature-based vocabulary lists, meet-the-author videos and book readings, readers' theatre scripts, and video book trailers. Access is provided by the California State Library. 

Social Studies

Gale Archives Unbound - Presents topically-focused digital collections of historical documents that support the research and study needs of scholars and students at the college and university level. Collections in Archives Unbound cover a broad range of topics from the Middle Ages forward-from Witchcraft to World War II to twentieth-century political history. Collections are chosen for Archives Unbound based on requests from scholars, archivists, and students.

Toucan Valley Social Studies Fact Cards - Information designed for quick reference for students in grades 4 to 8. Covers the California, United States, and world topics included in the social studies curriculum in California.
