Are you having trouble assisting your kids with school assignments? The Santa Barbara Public Library is here to help! Bilingual staff offer support to understand school assignments, figure out new apps and learning technology, and answer questions related to studying from home. Text us at 805-764-4542 or call 805-564-5674 between 2 - 4 PM on Mondays or Wednesdays, and we’ll send you an invitation to a Zoom meeting so that you and/or your child can video chat with us. If a telephone call works better for you, we can do that too. We can assist children directly with assignments or help parents with school-related challenges.
Reading doesn't come naturally for many. The Library has a new program to help children in 1st-4th grades who are having difficulty learning to read. Students will be paired with a tutor trained in the Orton-Gillingham methods.
The Orton-Gillingham approach uses multi-sensory learning, phonics based instruction, and other tools to demystify the process of learning to read. This approach was developed for readers with dyslexia, but are great strategies for all struggling readers, including English language learners.
The OG Readers curriculum teaches the sounds of the English language and their corresponding symbols, spelling rules and generalizations, and syllable types. The program uses a specific order of introduction of reading skills based on how we learn language. Students must master one reading skill before moving on to the next. The lessons are structured to include the same seven basic parts for each meeting: decoding and/or phonograms, sight word reading, the new concept for the lesson, alphabet knowledge, spelling, dictation, and oral reading.
Students will be matched with a tutor and meet with their them once a week for an hour at the library to practice skills that will improve their reading, writing, and spelling. Tutors are trained volunteers who have completed background checks.
