Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers increase the quality and breadth of Library services for everyone in the community. Thank you for considering contributing your time and skills.

To get signed up for one of our virtual volunteer trainings and begin the process of volunteering, please sign this application and waiver. Volunteers 18 years and older will be subject to a background check.

Central

Adult Education: Adult Literacy Tutor

  • Volunteer Tutors provide free one-on-one tutoring to adults in our community.
  • Help learners reach personal goals and gain the literacy skills they need.
  • No prior teaching/tutoring experience necessary.
  • Commitment, imagination, energy, flexibility, patience, and persistence are highly desired qualities in a tutor.
  • Tutor and learner pairs can meet at a location that works for both of them.
  • 8 hours of library-provided training required, 2 minimum hours per week commitment (one for prep., one for tutoring).
Circulation: Book Detective

  • No volunteering opportunities are available at this time.
Drop-In Mobile Assistant Tutors

  • No volunteering opportunities are available at this time.
Technology: Computer Coaches

  • No volunteering opportunities are available at this time.
Teen Volunteers: Volunteers Under 18 Years Old

  • No opportunities currently (as of 7/21/21).
Youth Services: OG Reader Tutor

  • Volunteer Tutors are a part of the Orton-Gillingham (OG) reading intervention program to teach kids who are struggling readers.
  • One-on-one tutoring setting with students between 1st-4th grades.
  • Must enjoy working with young people and exhibit patience.
  • Tutor and learner pairs meet in the evenings or on the weekends (after school hours) at the Santa Barbara Public Library.
  • 8 hour training required.
  • 1 hour minimum per week of tutoring, for 6 months commitment.

Eastside

Teen Volunteers - Sit on the Teen Advisory Board for the Eastside Library branch and help with special projects to benefit the library and the community

  • Attend meetings, training and events.
  • Communicate effectively through email and online tools.
  • Suggest books, magazines, music and other materials for purchase.
  • Promote the library to their peers.
  • Set goals and work well with other team members to achieve them.
  • Assist with the business planning of the Eastside Library Vending Machine.
  • Help plan and brainstorm programs for teens at the library.

Carpinteria

Teen Volunteers: Volunteers under 18 years old

  • Search library shelves to find books that patrons have requested from a master list.
  • Event help during certain times throughout the year.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Must be punctual, reliable, and professional.
  • At least one hour a week minimum requirement.

Montecito

  • Currently no volunteering opportunities.

Teens: If you are 16 years and older, you may volunteer virtually under the OG Reader Tutoring with Youth Services.

PLEASE NOTE: The Library volunteer program cannot be used to fulfill court-ordered community service hours. For more information about completing court-ordered community service hours in Santa Barbara County, please call 805-882-3649 or go to the Santa Barbara County Department of Probation website, and select "Community Service" from the horizontal menu.
