This winter, City Streets crews completed crucial street repair work around the City. On Chapala Street, crews made asphalt repairs at the Ortega Street intersection and replaced approximately one block of failed asphalt between Victoria and Sola Streets, next to the Public Market. This failure was deep and required a thick replacement of asphalt. On Milpas Street, crews made point repairs (repairs to small sections of failures) between Canon Perdido and Quinientos Streets. In this area, old slurry seal treatments were detaching from the surface due to wet weather. The repairs were deep in order to last until a full-width paving of the street. Full-width paving is expensive, so point repairs are a cost-effective way to extend the life of a roadway surface.
Between January and March, crews also responded to 214 requests for pothole filling. That number is expected to increase this spring due to road damage from the rainy season.
Additionally, the first phase of a major pavement maintenance project by Granite Construction is nearly complete. Phase 1 involved minor concrete construction to install curb ramps and repair sidewalks, primarily those adjacent to streets designated for slurry seal in Phase 2. Phase 2, taking place this spring, will provide crack sealing and slurry sealing of the pavement. Slurry seal helps to preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure and provide a new driving surface. View a list of streets scheduled for work.
