Draw a Map

A variety of map-drawing tools are available. Whether you use the powerful (but complicated) Maptitude Online Redistricting (MOR) tool, the simpler Dave’s Redistricting App online mapping tool, Excel, the paper map kit, or just draw on a napkin, we welcome your maps!

All mapping tools are available to the public, with the exception of MOR (#6), which is anticipated to be available in December.

1. Story Map is an easy to use “story” of demographic and other data to learn about your community and identify “communities of interest.” Story Map is to review and analyze data, not to create maps.

2. Interactive Review Map to review, analyze, and compare maps, not to create them. Zoom in and out on map boundaries, view population counts/ID#s, and view draft maps (once the draft maps are released). Similar to Google Maps in ease of use.

3. Paper-only maps for those without internet access or who prefer paper.

The basic paper-only map is provided as a pdf in English (1E) and Spanish (1S).

4. Paper maps with a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to calculate population totals.

Tool #2 is the paper map with a supplemental Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to calculate population totals. The PDF map itself has English (2ME) and Spanish (2MS) versions, as does the accompanying spreadsheet (2SE and 2SS).

  • Public Participation Kit – Paper Map w/ Population ID#s (in English or Spanish)
  • Public Participation Kit – Excel Spreadsheet (in English or Spanish)

5. Dave’s Redistricting App (DRA), a simple online map drawing tool to easily draw district maps.

How to Use DRA: Getting Started

The first step is to create an account on the DRA site. A user account is needed to create and submit district maps.

Once you are logged in, you can access two templates for Santa Barbara, one that is blank and another that has the existing districts.

On the template page, click the paintbrush icon to “Make an editable copy of this map.” This opens your own map of city precincts and blocks that you can assign to districts. Make sure to give your map a unique name.

When you finish your map, you must email to let us know that your map is ready and what its name is.

6. Maptitude Online Redistricting (MOR), a powerful online map drawing tool to draw district maps.
