About the Director
We are excited to welcome James Hatsedakis as the new director of Junior Lifeguards. James has been involved with the program since the age of 12, where he was first a participant. He began working as an instructor in 2000, and was promoted to the position of Assistant Director in 2007.
James loves working with kids and is currently a P.E. teacher at Hope Elementary School. In addition, he holds a water polo coaching position at Santa Barbara High School.
The Santa Barbara Jr. Lifeguard Program has accomplished a lot during the 10 years Mike Anderson directed the program. However, James has been there every step of the way, and has the support and respect from the Jr. Lifeguard staff and supervisors to ensure that this program maintains the high standards it is known for. James will be the first to admit that the program's success can be directly attributed to the 14 wonderful and dedicated instructors who keep coming back year after year.
The Jr. Guard Program has grown from 200 to 280 participants over the past five years and has successfully hosted two consecutive Regional State Championships in 2006 & 2007 at East Beach.
All the Jr. Guard instructors are certified ocean lifeguards, with advanced First Aid and CPR training.
