Jackie Bluestein, Washington School 5th/6th grade Classes

After the 5th and 6th grade classes at Washington School viewed the movie "Bag It", which examines our dependency on single-use bags, they decided to take action to reduce the use of single-use bags. The students developed a school project called "Paper Nor Plastic" and approached the issue in a very organized fashion.

Karen Robertson, Marymount SB

Karen Robertson, Marymount of Santa Barbara's fourth grade teacher, consistently organizes school-wide assemblies to educate the Marymount community about the benefits of reducing waste and to help them understand the how to properly dispose of waste.

She makes these assemblies fun by introducing the concepts of recycling and waste reduction with skits, songs and humor. Karen Robertson's effort and enthusiasm has inspired Marymount to work towards being a zero waste school by promoting reusable lunch packaging and designating clearly marked recycling and compost stations throughout the campus.
