September 2010 is National Preparedness Month. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO PREPARE? Here are some actions you should be taking and things you need to know in order to be Ready. Ÿ Do you have an Emergency Supply Kit in your home/office/car? The best way to prepare is to set aside supplies solely for emergencies or disasters. (Visit ready.gov for an Emergency Supply Kit checklist.) Ÿ What emergencies could occur in your area? How could you prepare for those emergencies specifically? Ÿ Does your family have a plan? What if you are separated at the time of the disaster? When was the last time you practiced your plan? Ÿ Are you prepared to help your neighbor? In most emergencies, the best way to get help more quickly is by working with your close neighbors. Do you know of anyone who might need a little extra help? Ÿ What are your local evacuation routes? How would you get out of town from work? How would you get out of town from home? Ÿ Does your city/county have an emergency alert system? If so, are you signed up to get alerts? Ÿ Do you know the local radio station you would tune into to get emergency information? If you answered “No” to any of the questions above contact the Fire Department’s Office of Emergency Services for assistance. You can also click on the Office of Emergency Services link located under Fire Links.

The Fire Department will be implementing the High Fire Hazard Vegetation Road Clearance Project starting on August 30, 2010. The work will continue until mid-November. The purpose of vegetation road clearance is to reduce the total amount of vegetation along roadways, enhance evacuation during a wildland fire and allow greater access for fire engines and equipment to respond during a wildfire.
This year we will be clearing 18.3 miles of roads in the Extreme Foothill and Foothill Zone of the high fire hazard area funded by the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District (W.F.S.A.D.). If you have questions related to the project or have questions related to City property requirements you can call the Fire Department at 564-5700. Please Click Here for more information, including a list of roads that will be completed. Sandbags & Flood Preparedness. Concerns over watershed damage that occurred as a result of the Tea and Jesusita Fires in the foothills above the City continue. Flooding will likely occur this winter 2010-11 in and down slope of the fire areas. NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE FOR THE COMING WINTER AND TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY. Protection of private property is your responsibility as a property owner and begins prior to storm events. Sandbags may be purchased at local hardware and building supply stores. Some building supply stores will deliver filled sandbags with advance notice. When properly placed, sandbags will redirect water and debris flows away from property improvements. Protect your property before the rain begins! When a "Flood Watch" is issued by National Weather Service and confirmed by City of Santa Barbara Public Works Officials, the City will open the Sandbag Station and make sandbags available to residents. Residents are reminded that the City Sand Bag Distribution Policy is designed to assist in the protection of private property only during storm emergency conditions. The primary Sandbag Station is located at the City of Santa Barbara Corporate Annex Yard at 401 East Yanonali Street, normally 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM. Sand and sandbags will be available to the public at the Sandbag Station. Residents should bring their own gloves and shovels and be prepared to fill the bags they need. The City will announce when the Sandbag Station is open and hours of operation and on Channel 18 (City-TV) and through other local media outlets. Before and during storm events through the winter residents should monitor the radio and TV and the City’s web site for updates and announcements. Begin with assessment of your property, especially if you live in the fire areas, adjacent to, or along San Roque Creek, Arroyo Burro Creek, Mission Creek, or Sycamore Creek. You can find information on how to protect your property from erosion mud flows and flooding on your property at: Homeowners Guide for Flood Prevention and Response A Homeowner’s Guide to Erosion Control For additional information, please call the City of Santa Barbara Public Works Department at (805) 568-5377.
On August 11, 2009 the Santa Barbara City Council voted to approve the enhanced fire sprinkler requirements for all structures built in the City. The sprinkler requirements were adopted under the Municipal Code, as part of the City’s amendments to the 2007 California Fire Code. The enhancements were designed to augment existing sprinkler requirements, making them more protective. Among the key provisions of the new sections are requirements for fire sprinklers in single family residences, along with additions and remodels to both residential and commercial structures.
