Santa Barbara has a longstanding history of horticultural excellence. Early in the 20th Century, horticultural pioneers such as Francesco Franceschi, Dr. A.B. Doremus, and E.O. Orpet started introducing and experimenting with hundreds of new plant varieties from around the world. They found Santa Barbara’s climate and soil conditions to be hospitable to many of them. Their work was valuable in the “greening “of Santa Barbara. The vision, dedication, and hard work of past generations of park arborists and horticulturists resulted in one of the most beautiful park systems in the world.
Local citizens and tourists alike, appreciate the beauty and diversity of our public spaces. Both current and future generations depend upon Parks Division staff to preserve and enrich this community treasure.
