The Mesa Lane Steps were constructed in 1982 to provide safe beach access for pedestrians. The original design included wood construction for the staircase that has been update to include a steel and concrete section.
The nearest beach access points are at Arroyo Burro Beach County Park over 4,200 feet to the west, and Camino Al Mar (1000 Steps) about one mile to the east of Mesa Lane at the southern end of Santa Cruz Boulevard. Beach access is also available at Shoreline Park, 1.5 miles to the east. The Mesa Lane Stairs are heavily used by residents of the West Mesa and Alta Mesa neighborhoods as well as by South Coast residents, including children, dog walkers, surfers, families, and others.
The beach below the bluffs is relatively narrow and rocky and is often covered in water due to tides. Dogs may be exercised off-leash on the beach from the Shoreline Park Staircase to the eastern edge of the Arroyo Burro Estuary.
