Santa Barbara "Tree City USA"

The Forestry section of the Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for approximately 45,000 trees along city streets and in city parks and open spaces. The mission of the Forestry section is to plant and care for all public trees for the benefit of residents to ensure a safe and healthy community. In addition, Forestry is responsible for enforcing the city ordinances regulating trees on public and private properties.

Santa Barbara has been designated a
“Tree City USA” for the past 25 consecutive years. This designation recognizes the accomplishments of the city tree program and the strong commitment of the city and its citizens to planting and maintaining public and private trees.

The Urban Forest Benefits Everyone

The trees in our urban forest yield benefits to all who live and visit our community. Trees are enormously valuable assets that make our community more livable:

§          by enhancing the beauty and enjoyment of our streets, parks, neighborhoods and commercial shopping areas.

§          by providing natural shading and heat reduction of paved streets and parking areas.

§          by reducing harmful pollutants, carbon dioxide and particulate matter in our air.

§          by providing habitat and food for birds and other wildlife.

§          by improving the quality of rainwater runoff through reduced soil erosion and trapping and holding water in a tree's foliage.

The benefits derived from the trees along city streets and on public property alone provide an appraised value of over 200 million dollars.
