How to Read the Water Usage Graph

The graph below shows the recent history of water usage in the City of Santa Barbara's service area, as measured by water produced and put into the distribution system. One acre foot equals 326,000 gallons. Each point on the graph represents a 12-month period. The graph includes potable water production, and recycled water for the period since 1989 when Phase I of the City's water reclamation project was completed.

A period of relative stability is evident during the mid-1980's. As severe drought developed during the late 1980's, usage declined moderately at first, then drastically as the drought emergency was declared in 1990. Since the end of the drought in 1992, usage has slowly recovered and has apparently leveled off at approximately 14,000 acre feet per year.
