Seven Simple Steps to Water Conservation

Businesses and institutions can reduce their water use and lower their utility costs by adopting conservation practices and replacing inefficient equipment or operations.

    Check for leaks.

    Use a broom, instead of a hose, for routine cleaning tasks. Rebates are available for Water brooms.

   Turn off water-using equipment when not in use, including dishwashers, garbage disposals, and food troughs.

   Upgrade equipment efficiency. Include annual maintenance for drinking water filters, pumps and ice machines.

    Replace inefficient plumbing fixtures, with water-less urinals and dual-flush toilets.

    Increase employee awareness of water conservation. Educated employees will be able to identify problems before they become serious.

   Call the Water Conservation Hotline for technical assistance and more water-wise tips. (805) 564-5460.

Taking conservation actions and installing efficient fixtures help reduce your water use year-round.

Know your water usage

Quick tips:

Start by reading your meter -  Water meters generally are located near the front of your property.  Read and record meter readings after hours when no water is being used.  If meter changes when no water is being used this may be an indication of a leak.  Your Water Meter  (PDF),  Medidor de Agua (PDF)

Incorporate reading your meter into daily, weekly or monthly maintenance or cleaning routines. If your business has multiple buildings or processes, to help you fully understand your water use, you can install a separate meter at each location.
