The City of Santa Barbara Fire Department provides a range of fire protection, prevention, and educational services to the City and its residents. The Wildland Fire Suppression Benefit Assessment District services that are provided for the benefit of property within the Assessment District are: -Vegetation Road Clearance -Defensible Space Chipping Services -Vegetation Management -Defensible Space and Fire Prevention Inspections ____________________________________________________________________ HISTORY On June 16, 2009 City Council approved the renewal of the Wildland Fire Suppression Assessment District, which has successfully achieved a reduction of the risks and threats of wildland fires through reduction of flammable vegetation.
The specifics relating to these efforts are as follows:
1) The Vegetation Road Clearance Program has improved the response and evacuation routes in the high fire hazard areas. Over 35 miles of road clearance has been completed in the District, which resulted in the removal of 758 cubic yards (or 150 tons) of flammable vegetation. Over 97% of this material was chipped and distributed back onto public and private lands. 2)The Chipping Services that were provided to homeowners resulted in an additional 1450 cubic yards (71 tons) of flammable vegetation being reduced to chips that were re-distributed back to the homeowners (100% of the material was re-used). 3) Full implementation of Vegetation Management Program aimed at creating a Community Fuels Treatment Network within the Extreme Foothill Zone. Over 20 acres of land was completed October 2008 through April 2009. 4) A Defensible Space Inspection / Assistance Program provides valuable information and assistance directly to property owners. As of July 2007, over 200 homeowners have requested defensible space inspection services, which fire engine company crews are performing on a weekly basis. We are still taking requests and encourage people to sign up. (more) 1. Wildland Fire Handout 2. Map of Assessment Area 3. FAQ’s 4. Link to Wildland Fire Plan
