Your safety is our job! You will find us on four miles of City beaches and at four swimming pool sites providing instructional and recreational programs and camps for all ages. Aquatics programs include swim instruction, fitness swimming, lifeguarding classes, water safety classes, outrigger canoe paddling, and recreational swim. Beach lifeguard service is provided at East, West and Leadbetter beaches daily during the summer and on weekends during the fall and spring.
Beach programs include the incredibly popular summer programs: Junior Lifeguard Program, Aquacamp, Beach Volleyball Camp and volleyball classes.
The Cabrillo Bathhouse at East Beach boasts a drop-in use fitness center with locker rooms. It also houses the East Beach Grill. There are 22 beach volleyball courts for drop-in use, classes, and tournaments.
Special outdoor events include triathlons, ocean swims, outrigger races, and lifeguard competitions. Summer in California is highlighted with the weeklong Semana Nautica Sports Festival every July.
Employment opportunities are available year-round for lifeguards, swim instructors, camp counselors, pool maintenance personnel, clerks and locker attendants.
MEET OUR STAFF Rich Hanna, Senior Recreation Supervisor Rich has worked with the City’s Aquatic programs since 1993, when he moved to Santa Barbara from New Zealand. Over the past 16 years, Rich has worked as a Beach Lifeguard Supervisor, Pool Manager, Aquatics Supervisor, and currently works as a Senior Recreation Supervisor in charge of aquatics, sports and tennis. Rich is a certified Aquatic Facility Operator, and has been involved in all levels of pool maintenance dating back to the locker room rennovations in 1998. Amber Workman, Pool Manager and Recreation Coordinator Amber Workman has been working in the Aquatic field since 2002, and she has been working for the City of Santa Barbara since 2010.
