Measure G Approved for November Ballot
Telecommunication & Video Users Tax Reduction & Modernization Ordinance
Measure G is being submitted to the voters by the unanimous vote of the Santa Barbara City Council to update the City’s existing Utility User’s Tax (UUT) on telecommunications and video services. If approved by voters, Measure G will reduce the tax rate from 6% to 5.75% for all city residents who use “land line” telephone service, cell phones, Cable TV, and similar video services. Internet access service charges are specifically excluded from the tax.
The tax currently provides over $4 million to fund vital city services including:
Police, Fire, and 911 Emergency Communications
Parks
Recreation
Library Services
Street & Pothole Repairs
The current UUT was enacted almost 40 years ago before the introduction of many modern telecommunication and video TV technologies. Passage of Measure G will also replace the existing ordinance with provisions that are consistent with new federal and state laws which modernize definitions so all telecommunications devices are treated the same for the purposes of the tax.
