David Postada, Engineering Technician III assisting a customerThe Public Works Permit Counter offers the convenience of a one-stop shop for answers to many common questions as well as securing over-the-counter Public Works Permits.

The Permit Counter is located within our Community Development/Public Works Building at 630 Garden Street, Santa Barbara, California, U.S.A. You may telephone staff at (805) 564-5388 or stop by the office from 8:30 a.m.-12 noon and 1:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m. (PT), Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. The Permit Counter's fax number is (805) 897-1927.

Why Do I need a Public Works Construction Permit?

A Public Works Construction Permit is an important part of protecting the public while work is being done in the public right of way. It assures that proper and adequate notice is given to the walking, cycling, driving, etc., public that an obstruction is ahead. It also assures that any work being performed is inspected and meets the minimum City standards. A permit also protects public facilities, i.e., water and sewer mains, from damage, while coordinating to avoid conflicting work in the public right of way.

What Types of Permits are Issued by the Public Works Permit Counter?

We issue various permits for access to or use of the City's right-of-way such as trenching permits for installation or repair of water or sewer lines; installation or replacement of sidewalks or driveway approaches; access ramps; transportation permits for oversize; temporary obstructions in the right-of-way such as dumpsters, etc.

What Information is Available from the Public Works Permit Counter?

The location and depth of sewer and water mains, storm drains, and aerial and topographic maps of parcels within the City limits, construction drawings for public improvements, and capital projects out to bid are just some of the information available at the Public Works Permit Counter.
