1) I am using Windows OS and I am seeing odd images that should not be in the Records Archive. What is happening?
The default image viewer for Windows XP is Windows Picture and FAX Viewer. If you have not installed any other viewer, such as Tiff Surf, then Windows Picture and FAX Viewer is the program that will display the LDTRA documents. Windows Picture and FAX Viewer copies the images to the Temporary Internet Files Folder on your local computer. When you click on the Next (
) and Back (
) buttons (or touch the left-arrow and right-arrow keys on your computer keyboard), you are viewing the next image in your Temporary Internet Files Folder, not the next image from the LDTRA. In order to use Windows Picture and FAX Viewer, you must close the viewer each time you are done viewing a single document.

2) Can I print images off the Internet when viewing street file documents?
Yes. However, you must use the Tiff Surf print button, not the web browser's print button or File, Print... function. The Tiff Surf print button can be found in the toolbar in the top of the LDTRA image.

3) How do I zoom in/out when viewing the street file documents on the internet?
Zoom in and out of the image using the Tiff Surf zoom tools. These tools can be found in the Tiff Surf toolbar and they look like magnifying glasses with a plus sign and minus sign in the middle.

When Apple QuickTime is installed or updated, it often re-associates itself with .TIF and .TIFF filename extension. If you have recently installed or updated QuickTime or another web browser plug-in, you will need to re-install the Tiff Surf plug-in.

The version of Tiff Surf licensed and provided by the City of Santa Barbara is not the most current version. There are some known incompatibilities with the Windows XP operating system. The City of Santa Barbara makes no endorsements as to the following options. These links are provided for the convenience of City web site visitors.
a) City staff have identified an alternate Windows TIFF Viewer for Microsoft Windows 2000, XP and Server 2003 called Brava!® Reader. The plug-in has been tested in a limited trial, and it appears to function well. Brava!® Reader is free of charge and comes in versions for Internet Explorer, Netscape and Firefox. .
b) City staff have identified an alternate Windows TIFF Viewer called AlternaTIFF®. AlternaTIFF® is available for Windows 98, ME, NT4, 2000, and XP operating systems. This plug-in has been tested and appears to work well with Windows XP. Though it is free of charge, registration of the product is required. Click here to link to AlternaTIFF

6) I am using Windows XP and the TIFF images are opening in Apple QuickTime, not the TIFF viewer I installed?
Sometimes you will install one of the TIFF Viewers, yet the images will continue to open (distorted) in Apple QuickTime. If this is the case, and you confirm that one of the other TIFF viewers is installed, try this procedure.
a) Close all web browsers
b) Open the Windows Control Panel (Start, Settings, Control Panel)
c) Open the QuickTime control
d) Click on the Browser tab
e) Click on the MIME Setting... button
f) Open the Images - Still image files (click on the [+] sign) branch of the MIME Types tree
g) Uncheck the TIFF image option
h) Click on the OK button to close and accept your MIME Type changes
i) Click on the OK button to close the QuickTime Preferences window and accept your changes
