Human Services Programs – Current Projects

The following projects were approved by City Council on March 25, 2008 for Human Services funding from July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009:

Alano Club www.alanoclubsb.org
To operate a fiscally solvent, self sufficient, volunteer driven, member-owned organization that provides a safe and sober environment for the Recovery community 16 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Bringing Our Community Home
To focus on getting chronically homeless persons into permanent supportive housing, to help them achieve residential stability, increase their skill levels and/or incomes, and obtain greater self determination.

CAC-Coronel Child Development Center  www.cacsb.com
Assist low-income families in the Lower-Westside Neighborhood of the City of Santa Barbara to maintain economic self-sufficiency by providing quality, subsidized child care.

CAC-Senior Nutrition  www.cacsb.com
Provide congregate and home delivered meals to low-income, isolated, minority, and/or frail seniors living in the City of Santa Barbara in order to improve their nutritional intake, increase social integration, and increase access to supportive services.

Child Abuse Listening Mediation  www.calm4kids.org
Prevent and treat child abuse among children, youth and family members in high risk situations so as to stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse within families, avoid the negative impact on the lives of children affected: e.g., delinquency, school dropout, substance abuse, teen pregnancies, etc., and restore healthy and loving family relations.

City at Peace www.cpnational.org
City at Peace is a youth development program that uses the performing arts to promote cross-cultural understanding and teach non-violent conflict resolution skills. 

Community Kitchen
Provide free hot nutritious meals to the homeless and poor of Santa Barbara at the Homeless Shelter/Day Center at 816 Cacique Street and various satellite locations.

Domestic Violence Solutions - D.V. Intervention  www.dvsolutions.org
Provide a weekly domestic violence intervention program that teaches clients nonviolent communication skills and behavioral alternatives to help eliminate the use of violence and abuse.

Domestic Violence Solutions - Second Stage www.dvsolutions.org
Provide transitional housing for women who have been victims of domestic violence and their children in order to assist them in creating long-term stability for themselves and their children.

Domestic Violence Solutions – Shelter  www.dvsolutions.org
Provide safe emergency shelter and supportive services for battered women and their children who are in danger of physical harm; to assist women in rebuilding their lives so that they can live independently and free of violence; to assist the children by helping to build their self esteem and to deal with the many emotions they experience as a result of witnessing or experiencing violence in their home.

Dyslexia Awareness & Resource Center www.dyslexiacenter.org
Provide low-income/at-risk children in Santa Barbara with undiagnosed learning disabilities a comprehensive identification, education and accommodation program.

Family Service Agency - Big Brother/Sister   www.fsacares.org
Provide adult mentors for at-risk children to help them establish meaningful relationships, thereby making them less likely to engage in risky or harmful behavior.

Family Service Agency - CRIS/Helpline  www.fsacares.org
Provide information, referral assistance and/or crisis intervention, follow-up and service calls to appropriate community resources through a 24-hour hotline.

Family Service Agency – Homemaker  www.fsacares.org
Provide regular homemaker service to help seniors and persons with disabilities remain independent in their own homes as long as feasible, avoiding premature hospitalization/institutionalization, decreasing financial costs to themselves, their families and society, and maintaining/achieving a sense of well-being and self-worth.

Distribute 2,000,000 pounds of food to alleviate the incidence of hunger among the residents of Santa Barbara.

Foodbank - Brown Bag  www.foodbanksbc.org
Supplement the nutritional needs of low-income seniors by providing donated, surplus and specially purchased food at no cost to the recipient

Friendship Center  www.friendshipcentersb.org
Contribute to the safety and well-being of frail, elders and their caregivers by providing the elders with positive, caring and professional day care services including psychosocial activities, medical monitoring, counseling, transportation and meals and by providing the elders’ caregivers respite from care-giving duties and providing them with support groups and information in order to relieve their physical and emotional stress, attend to their own needs and other responsibilities, including fulltime jobs or caring for their own children.

To develop a cadre of parent and teen leaders from the Latino community who act as positive role models, engage in strategies to improve youth disposition to education, and address city-wide issues to improve the lives of all SB residents.

Assist persons with disabilities in activities of daily living in their efforts to achieve the highest level of independence possible through direct consumer services, while eliminating barriers that prevent their full participation in their own life choices and in the community.

Jewish Federation – Center for Successful Aging www.csasb.org
Provide compassionate, trained Senior Peer Counselors to offer individual and group support for seniors to meet the challenges of aging-related issues and achieve an optimum quality of life.

Legal Aid Foundation www.lafsbc.org
Eradicate unsafe and unhealthy housing conditions and prevent homelessness; prevent elder abuse, child abuse and domestic violence; assist those who rely on benefits, such as Social Security, to secure those benefits; and otherwise ensure equal access to the courts and administrative boards by providing high-quality legal assistance, counseling and representation.  

Long Term Care Ombudsman  www.ombudsmansb.org
Provide Ombudsman Advocacy services to all residents in long term care facilities in order to respond to complaints of elder abuse.

Mental Health Association of S.B.   www.mhainsb.org
Make available a safe and supportive environment where adults with severe mental disabilities are welcome and accepted.  To provide rehabilitation and socialization services 6 days a week to all clients at no cost to them.

Provide a food pantry to distribute groceries to low-income persons living with or affected by HIV/AIDS to help them maintain and improve their nutrition.

To increase the academic performance of children, involve their parents in the academic process, and help them keep their children away from gang influence.

Provide counseling, psychotherapy, social services and case management to low-income residents contributing to more stable day-to-day functioning, improved quality of life and movement towards greater self-sufficiency.

Reduce unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) among Santa Barbara area teenagers through the implementation of three sexual health education programs.

Primo Boxing Club, Inc.
Provide youth-enhancement activities, primarily boxing, martial arts and basketball, for Santa Barbara youth as an alternative to gangbanging, drugs and crime. 

Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic www.rfbd.org/sb
To record textbooks for blind, dyslexic, learning disabled or print-handicapped students in grades k-12 plus college and graduate school, and to help those students access recorded textbooks.

Provide safe transitional housing with supportive services to homeless individuals suffering from mental illness combined with drug/alcohol problems.

S.B. County DA – Victim Witness – SART 
To reduce the trauma of children, teen and adult survivors of sexual assault by reducing the number of interviews they experience and by coordinating the activities of the multidisciplinary team to respond in a timely, supportive and sensitive manner.

Provide affordable childcare services for families with children 6 weeks to 2.5 years of age and to provide family support services and referrals.

Provide financial assistance for safe, accessible and affordable childcare programs staffed by competent, responsible and loving caregivers that understand and meet the needs of children.

Provides free, easy and local access to dental care for the homeless of Santa Barbara.

SB Police Activities League www.santabarbarapal.com
To decrease the number of 7th and 8th graders engaging in criminal activity by providing after-school activities at Santa Barbara, La Cumbre and La Colina Junior High Schools.

S.B. Rape Crisis Center  www.sbrapecrisiscenter.org
Provide crisis intervention services, including accompaniment, advocacy and emotional support services to assault survivors, their families and/or friends.

SB Tennis Patrons www.sbtennispatrons.com
To provide children at Franklin Elementary School with after-school homework assistance and tennis instruction, to give participants the tools necessary to succeed as they move through adolescence and beyond.

St. Vincent’s – PATHS  www.stvincents-sb.org
To provide transitional housing and supportive services for single mothers and their children to help them build healthy families, gain independence from welfare and advance along a career path becoming contributing members of society.

Storyteller Children’s Center www.storytellercenter.org
To provide high-quality, tuition-free early childhood education for homeless and at-risk children, as well as comprehensive support services for their families.

The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Barbara www.boysgirls.org
Provides educational programs to at-risk, underserved youths with little or no positive adult support to complete homework, excel at school, and increase self-esteem and confidence in their abilities as students.

To assist participants in retaining their housing by experiencing greater economic and interpersonal stability by teaching skills that lead to greater income, more job security and better overall competitiveness in the Santa Barbara job market.

To provide a safe haven as an alternative to incarceration for chronic homeless mentally ill men and women at risk of violent crimes.

Zona Seca
Teach teenagers the fundamentals of digital video production, photography and other multimedia arts, with an emphasis on community issues as subject matter, enabling them to make real change in their lives and communities, including the reduction of gang related activities, school failure, violent behavior or drug use.
