Human Services Programs – Current Projects

The following projects were approved by City Council on March 22, 2011 for Human Service funding from July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012:

 

AHA! Academy of Healing Arts for Teens

AHA! Academy of Healing Arts for Teens delivers a social and emotional intelligence-building program to 700+ unduplicated teens/year through in-school, after-school, and summer programs.

AIDS Housing – Sarah House

To provide housing and end-of-life care to low-income and homeless individuals, as well as 24-hour residential care to those living with HIV/AIDS.

Boys and Girls Club of SB, Inc. (Downtown)

To provide daily educational programs to at-risk, underserved youth ages 6-18, with little or no positive adult support to complete homework, raise their grades, complete homework assignments, excel at school, and increase self-esteem and confidence in their abilities as students.

Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

Assist clients to address acute withdrawal symptoms and achieve abstinence from alcohol and/or drugs as first step to achieving recovery from chemical dependency and to successfully engage clients who have completed detoxification in ongoing treatment services and referrals.

Bringing Our Community Home (BOCH)

The primary goal of BOCH is to focus on getting chronically homeless persons into permanent supportive housing which consists of comprehensive, integrated, individualized case management to help them achieve residential stability and increase their skill levels and/or income levels.

Casa Esperanza – Community Kitchen

To provide free, hot, nutritious meals to the homeless and very low-income hungry people in Santa Barbara.

Child Abuse Listening Mediation (CALM)

To prevent and treat child abuse among children, youth and family members in high risk situations to: 1) stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse within families; 2) avoid the negative impact on the lives of children affected (delinquency, school dropout, substance abuse, teen pregnancy), and; 3) restore healthy and loving family relations.

Casa Serena

To provide low-income women struggling with diseases of alcoholism and drug addiction a scholarship in order to receive treatment at one of Casa Serena's three recovery homes.  Scholarships will provide clients with meals, counseling services a safe, sober living environment in which to recover.

City at Peace

City at Peace is a youth development program that uses the performing arts to promote cross-cultural understanding and teach non-violent conflict resolution skills. City at Peace empowers teenagers to create safe, healthy and peaceful lives and communities.

City of SB – Rental Housing Mediation Task Force

To help maintain rental housing by providing information on the rights and responsibilities of parties involved in rental situations, and providing mediation services as needed in order to avoid litigation.

Channel Islands YMCA

House homeless youth ages 18-21 in Santa Barbara and prepare them for self-sufficiency and independence.


Community Action Commission – So. Coast Taskforce on Gangs

Overall mission is to see an overall reduction in gang membership/activity.

Community Action Commission – Senior Nutrition

To improve the nutritional intake, increase social integration, and increase access to supportive services for low-income and/or frail seniors living in the City of Santa Barbara.

Domestic Violence Solutions - Emergency Shelter

To provide safety and supportive services for battered women and their children who are in danger of physical harm; to assist women in rebuilding their lives so that they can live independently and free of violence; to assist the children by helping to build their self esteem and to deal with the many emotions they experience as a result of witnessing or experiencing violence in their homes.

Domestic Violence Solutions – Second Stage

To assist women who have been victims of domestic violence in creating long-term stability for themselves and their children.

Family Service Agency – 211/CRIS HelpLine

To offer 24-hour information and referral services for health and human service needs; ensuring Santa Barbara residents access to care.

Family Service Agency – Caregiver Mental Health

The overall goal is to provide direct interventions and supportive services to those who are bearing the burden of caring for an elderly family member. Seniors will be able to live better and happier lives due to the fact that their caregivers have increased emotional stability and other resources to support and sustain them.


Family Service Agency – Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Provide adult mentors for at-risk children to help them establish meaningful relationships, thereby making them less likely to engage in risky or harmful behavior.

Food From The Heart

To bring high quality, nutritious meals to individuals experiencing a health crisis.


Foodbank – Brown Bag Program for Seniors

To assist financially qualified people over the age of 60 meet their nutritional needs and remain independent for as long as possible. The Foodbank provides recipients with bags of groceries containing nutritious, staple foods twice a month, at no cost.

Foodbank – Warehouse

To reduce hunger in the City of Santa Barbara by distributing food from the Santa Barbara warehouse through a network of nonprofit agencies and programs, and through the Mobile Food Pantry distributions to low-income people.

Friendship Center

To contribute to the well-being of frail, dependent older adults and their caregivers by: 1) providing the elders with positive, caring and professional day services including psychosocial activities, medical monitoring, counseling, transportation and meals; 2) providing nutritious meals and snacks to the elders while they are at the Center, and; 3) providing the elders’ caregivers with respite from their duties and offering them support groups and education to relieve their stress and improve their care giving abilities.

To develop a cadre of 100 parent and teen leaders from the Latino community who act as positive role models, engage in strategies to improve youth disposition to education, and address city-wide issues to improve the lives of all SB residents.

To assist Santa Barbara community members with disabilities in their efforts to achieve the highest level of independence possible through direct consumer driven services, along with eliminating barriers that prevent their participation in activities of daily living.

Jewish Federation

Provide Portraits participants with meaningful, life-altering experiences by connecting them with Holocaust Survivors to instill hope, inspire positive behaviors, forge community connections across cultural and socio-economic barriers, and encourage peer mentorships that decrease gang violence.

To provide legal representation, advice, education and advocacy in critical civil legal matters and, in doing so, combat domestic violence, poverty, child and elder abuse, prevent homelessness and ensure safe and decent housing for all residents of the City of Santa Barbara.

Long Term Care Ombudsman Services

To investigate complaints of poor care, suspected abuse, and quality of care issues to all residents residing in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Mental Health Association – Fellowship Club

To make a safe and supportive environment where adults with severe mental health disabilities are welcome and accepted. To provide rehabilitation and socialization services five days a week to all clients at no cost to them.

New Beginnings Counseling Center

Pacific Pride Foundation – Necessities of Life Project

People’s Self Help Housing – Gang Prevention through Education

To provide positive after school activities for youth ages 6 to 17 to increase school academic performance, provide positive activity alternatives for at-risk youth, and reduce youth gang membership and involvement.

To reduce unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among Santa Barbara area teenagers and young adults through the implementation of two family planning and sexual health education programs.

S.B. Arts Alliance – Parks & Recreation

Art-based mentoring program whose main goal is to involve identified at-risk young people on the Eastside and Westside neighborhoods to address juvenile delinquency, youth-on-youth violence, and vandalism through the arts by providing relevant adult mentorship, development volunteer community service activities that promote civic participation, providing educational art workshops/discussions that emphasize life skills development, and promoting social responsibility.

S.B. County DA – Victim Witness, SART
County of Santa Barbara District Attorney
To reduce the trauma of children, teen and adult survivors of sexual assault by reducing the number of interviews they experience and by coordinating the activities of the multidisciplinary team to respond in a timely, supportive and sensitive manner.

S.B. Jobs Apprenticeship – Parks & Recreation

To provide a year round job training, paid employment opportunities within the City, and on-going life skills development to increase participant's potential for future employment with the City and private sector.

S.B. Neighborhood Clinics – Dental Care for the Homeless

To provide free, easy and local access to dental care for the homeless population living in Santa Barbara.

S.B. Police Activities League (PAL) - Jr. High After-School Program

To provide accessible recreational programming to low-income and at-risk 7th and 8th graders in Santa Barbara that will serve as an alternative to delinquent and gang activity.

S.B. Rape Crisis Center

To provide 24-hour crisis intervention services, medical and legal accompaniment and advocacy services, follow-up services, information and referrals, and counseling services to reduce the trauma of, and work toward the eradication of, sexual assault.

To provide transitional housing and services for single mothers and their children so that women are able to pursue education, career and personal goals that will help them to become positively engaged as parents and effective in household management and allowing them to build strong families and move from welfare and other forms of dependence to self-sufficiency.

To help improve the lives of the homeless and at-risk children through: 1) strengthening positive social-emotional skills; 2) acquisition and use of early language/communication; 3) opportunities to develop their sense of competence; 4) improvements in health, and; 5) stabilization and improvement of their family/home environment.

To ensure chronically homeless and at-risk home individuals have shelter in order to avoid hypothermia and avoidable death on nights with dangerous weather conditions.

United Boys & Girls Club (Westside) – Westside Teen Program Director

To prevent high risk behaviors in youth and teens (gang membership, juvenile delinquency, violence, and substance abuse) by teaching participants skills to resist negative behaviors and build self-esteem, and also provide positive recreational activities to youth ages 5-18 through the extended evening hours program.

To provide individuals and families with food, clothing and household goods to stabilize their immediate human services needs so that they have enough money to pay rent and transportation costs, and to provide Job Smart program assistance to individuals.

To provide a safe haven as an alternative to incarceration for chronically homeless, mentally ill men and women at risk of violent crimes.
