The project involves measures designed to reduce wildland fire hazard. Areas of high wildland fire hazard have been identified. Vegetation management areas on public and private lands are identified and methods of vegetation management are provided. Vegetation management techniques include mowing of vegetation, removal of between 1/3 and ½ of flammable vegetation in a mosaic pattern, removal of tree limbs that provide a route for fire to follow to the tree canopy, removal of exotic invasive species, thinning of eucalyptus groves, and prescribed burns. An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) has been approved for this project. The EIR focuses on project impacts to aesthetics, biological resources, cultural resources, hazards, and public services, and identifies mitigation measures to reduce potentially significant effects.

The Wildland Fire Plan EIR was certified by City Council in May of 2004.
