CREEK WEEK
is an annual community event celebrating our local creeks and the ocean with many local groups sponsoring events to help build awareness and stewardship of the natural treasures of Santa Barbara.

Coastal Cleanup Day is an international event to raise awareness of the issues of ocean and coastal conservation, to pick up litter, to encourage recycling, and to promote community pride.

Join friends and neighbors helping to restore the wildlife habitat that surrounds Lake Los Carneros. We’re continuing to plant, water, mulch, and weed. Hand tools, gloves, and good company will be provided.

Cleanup of Carpinteria,
Santa Monica, and Franklin Creeks

Meet at Carpinteria City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave.

Join the City of Carpinteria for their quarterly cleanup of Carpinteria creeks!

RESULTS: 15 participants collected 122 lbs of trash and 84 lbs of recycling, along with a dead perch in Franklin Creek. They managed to clean the length of both concrete lined channels (Franklin and Santa Monica Creeks) and almost the entirety of Carpinteria Creek due to the good volunteer turnout.


Tour of Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park

Meet at the park entrance at the corner of
Sandyland and Ash Avenue in Carpinteria

Join the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Friends and the City of Carpinteria to learn about the relationships between the sea and our local creeks as you witness sharks and mullets up Franklin Creek. Enjoy the abundant bird life the merging of these two habitats creates. Witness the diversity of plants that the salty creek side environment can grow.

RESULTS: While it was well over 100 degrees in Carpinteria on Sunday, six community members showed up to join Andrew Brooks, director of the UC NRS Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve, on a tour of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park. Mr. Brooks discussed the importance of creeks in connecting local watersheds, as well as the role and importance of coastal wetlands.

The Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration (CCBER) is hosting a tour of the San Clemente project and an opportunity to plant native plants.

Initiated in 2007, this 6 acre, innovative stormwater management project was recently awarded a best practices award for water efficiency and water quality. The site also includes a protected wetland and restoration of the locally rare southern tarplant.

Walking Tour of Carpinteria Salt Marsh Nature Park and Carpinteria Salt Marsh Preserve

Meet at entrance to the City of Carpinteria’s Salt Marsh Nature Park on
Ash Avenue in Carpinteria

This walking tour of the City of Carpinteria’s Salt Marsh Nature Park and the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County’s Carpinteria Salt Marsh Preserve will focus on the physical and biological connections between local creeks and the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. The tour will highlight the importance of creeks as wildlife corridors and coastal salt marshes as biofilters. Visitors will have the opportunity to view two large salt marsh restoration projects that have been conducted within the Marsh for the past 10 years.

Marine Plastics Debris Study Data Collection and Analysis

Monday, September 27th


Caltrans flood control channel on Mission CreekMission Creek Steelhead Recovery Presentation

Watershed Resource Center, 2981 Cliff Drive, at the Arroyo Burro County Beach Park

Learn about the City of Santa Barbara and Environmental Defense Center’s project to restore access for steelhead trout in Mission Creek.

Steelhead are the most endangered species in Santa Barbara, and they migrate into Mission Creek almost every year. The Caltrans flood control channels impede migration, and are the site of the longest steelhead restoration project ever planned.

RESULTS: EDC’s Brian Trautwein, biologist Matt Stoecker, and Creeks Division Manager Cameron Benson provided a presentation to 25 community members summarizing the Mission Creek Steelhead barrier removal projects, then had an hour-long question and answer session.

Tuesday, September 28th

Join the City of Goleta for a cleanup of Glen Annie Creek.

RESULTS: A combination of unseasonably warm weather and the fact that it was a weekday event (this is after all Creek Week, not Creek Weekend) kept the event at two participants, who were few but mighty, collecting 76 lbs of trash in just a little under 2 hours. Among the items collected were an automobile tire, a bicycle tire rim, a number of large plastic containers, and a traffic cone, along with plenty of bottles and cans, film plastic, plastic wrappers, cigarette butts, the ubiquitous bits of Styrofoam, and a partially buried (empty) cash register drawer.

Tour of the Carpinteria Creek Mouth Habitat Restoration Project
12pm – 1pm
Meet at the Carpinteria Creek Mouth, Carpinteria State Park

Join South Coast Habitat Restoration and Channel Islands Restoration for a tour of the recently started habitat restoration project. The project will remove non-native invasive plants from the mouth of Carpinteria Creek and plant native plants from the local area to enhance the biodiversity of the creek mouth.

Walking Wednesdays Mission Creek Walk

Meet at the Garden Street Parking Lot on Cabrillo Blvd. at the beach

Join COAST and Santa Barbara Walks for a Walking Wednesdays tour of Mission Creek from Canon Perdido to the beach. City of Santa Barbara staff will speak about elements of the Lower Mission Creek Flood Control Project and various Creeks Division projects. Meet at the beach, where a bus will be provided to shuttle participants to Canon Perdido Street, then walk back to the beach along Mission Creek (about 1.5 miles).

RESULTS: 12 community members joined in the walk, learning about the City’s various projects along Mission Creek. Participants discussed fish passage projects, upcoming restoration projects, and entered the construction site to view progress on the Haley & De La Vina Bridge Replacement.

Restoring Carpinteria Creek: An overview of the ongoing efforts to restore the watershed

Come hear a presentation by various members of the Carpinteria Creek Watershed Coalition and learn about local efforts to restore the Carpinteria Creek watershed. The presentation will cover topics such as restoring steelhead trout and removing non-native invasive plants.

Join the City of Goleta to replace storm drain markers. Storm drain markers serve as an important reminder to the community that everything that enters the storm drain flows directly to our creeks and ocean untreated.

Mission Creek at Oak ParkNative Planting at Mission Creek at Oak Park

Meet at the Oak Park Tennis Courts parking lot

Join the City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division, Horny Toad Activewear, and the Santa Barbara County Youth Corps to remove invasive ivy and plant native plants at the Mission Creek Restoration and Fish Passage Project at the Tallant Road Bridge in Oak Park. Please wear sturdy shoes. Tools, gloves, and refreshments will be provided.

RESULTS: 20 volunteers helped plant over 200 native plants at Oak Park! Horny Toad Activewear provided the bulk of the volunteers, with a few park neighbors joining in to help. Trash collected during the planting included many candy/chip wrappers, a few batteries, bottles, and cans.

Meet on the sidewalk next to the Sea Landing Sportfishing Building, 301 W. Cabrillo Blvd.


All birders should park on Bath Street or Mason Street (no time limit), or use paid City lot parking. We will bird the SB Harbor and Stearns Wharf Area. Target Birds:  Waterfowl, Shorebirds, Peregrine Falcon, Song birds.

Help collect water quality data at sites in the Goleta Slough watershed as part of Channelkeeper’s volunteer-based water quality monitoring program, Stream Team. Every month, Stream Team volunteers test common water quality parameters at up to 18 sites in the Goleta Slough watershed, including the seven major tributaries as well as the Slough itself. The outing will last 2-3 hours.

RESULTS:
About 75 community members visited informational tables provided by organizations including the City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division, Friends of the Douglas Family Preserve, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, Agua Pura, PoopPac, Environmental Defense Center, Chumash Maritime Association, and AFS Green Schools. The Chumash Maritime Association was in attendance and in the four hours of the event, they created a 12 foot long tule reed boat that will be launched and paddled later in the week! To see their creation, visit the Watershed Resource Center. There was also a very informative video shown about the Mission Creek Steelhead Restoration effort that was created by students.
