Creeks Restoration and Water Quality Improvement Division

Oil and fluids from leaky cars flows to the creeks and the ocean.

What We Can Do About
Leaky Cars

Creeks Division Logo

Dumping a single quart of motor oil down the storm drain can pollute 250,000 gallons of water. Automotive fluids are extremely toxic to fish and other aquatic wildlife. Antifreeze is especially harmful to animals that are attracted to its sweet smell and taste. Soapy water from car washing contains soaps and surfactants that pollute creeks and cause algae blooms.

Leaks:

ü      Inspect your car on a regular basis for any leaking fluid.

ü      Catch all leaks with a drip pan and get them repaired as soon as possible.

ü      Clean up any fluid that reaches the ground immediately.

ü      Sprinkle an absorbent material, such as kitty litter, over the spill and then sweep it up.

Disposal and Recycling of Used Automotive Products:

ü      Car fluids and battery acid should never be poured into a creek, down a storm drain, into the gutter, or onto the ground.

ü      Recycle automotive products, including motor oil, antifreeze, and some batteries at the local waste collection center.

ü      Dispose of used products as hazardous waste.
