CREEK WEEK is an annual community event celebrating our local creeks and the ocean with many local groups sponsoring events to help build awareness and stewardship of the natural treasures of Santa Barbara.

Saturday, September 17th | 27th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day 9am – 12pm Various Locations
Coastal Cleanup Day is an international event to raise awareness of the issues of ocean and coastal conservation, to pick up litter, to encourage recycling, and to promote community pride.
Sign up to be a Beach or Creek Captain, or participate in cleanups at local beaches and creeks throughout Santa Barbara County!

| RESULTS: Coastal Cleanup Day 2011 had another huge volunteer turnout! There were 1221 volunteers at 30 beaches and creeks in Santa Barbara County, 500 more volunteers than 2009! They collected 6114 pounds of trash and 1094 pounds of recycling, for a total of 7220 pounds of debris! That is 2110 more pounds of debris than in 2010!

| Ellwood Beach and Bluff Clean-up 9am – 12pm Meet at the top of Ellwood Mesa Bluffs, at the chimney by the beach access (straight out from Ellwood Beach Drive)
| Join the City of Goleta for a clean-up of Ellwood Beach and Bluffs. Please park on Coronado, Phelps, Ellwood Beach Drive, or the Sperling Reserve. Walk or bike to the clean-up site.

| Guided Hike of the Arroyo Hondo Preserve 10am Arroyo Hondo Preserve
Join in a guided hike and explore Arroyo Hondo's beautiful and dramatic landscape, including miles of trails that wind through oak woodland, chaparral, and riparian areas. The Preserve boasts very diverse flora and fauna and is a wonderful place to learn about local natural history.
Those interested in geology can see many different rock strata exposed and some spectacular rock formations. Arroyo Hondo, sometimes called the Jewel of the Gaviota Coast, is rich in history. It was once a stagecoach stop and has a well-preserved adobe.

Sunday, September 18th | Baron Ranch Restoration Tour and Community Planting Day 9am – 1pm Baron Ranch
Join the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department, Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division for a tour of the recently completed riparian restoration along Arroyo Quemado on the Baron Ranch, and following the tour help plant additional native plants along the creek.

| Park along the road shoulder at the entrance to the Ranch (carpool if possible as parking is limited). A shuttle will be available from the Ranch entrance down to the restoration site. The shuttle is limited to 18 participants, and you must reserve a spot in advance! Please wear sturdy shoes, bring gardening/work gloves, water, hat and sunscreen.

| Tour of the San Clemente Restoration at UCSB 12pm Meet at the corner of Los Carneros & El Colegio (Isla Vista)
UCSB’s Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration will be offering a tour of the San Clemente Restoration site. The San Clemente site is a six acre open space located at the corner of Los Carneros Road and El Colegio Road.
| This restoration site was mitigated as part of the San Clemente Housing Project and shows the true beauty and function of bioswales. The tour may run from one to two hours.

| Tour of the Manzanita Village Restoration at UCSB 12pm Meet at the Surf Showers near the east end of Manzanita Village
The Manzanita Village Restoration site began in 2002 and has flourished into a functional wetland. The tour will focus on water quality and bioswale maintenance.

| Walking Wednesdays with COAST 5:30 – 7pm Meet at Oak Park Tennis Court Parking Lot
Join the City of Santa Barbara Creeks Division and the Coalition for Sustainable Transportation (COAST) for a walking tour of Mission Creek. Participants will learn about the recently completed Mission Creek Restoration at the Tallant Road Bridge, then walk approximately one mile in the creek to the Mission Creek Restoration at the Caltrans Channel for a tour of the construction site.

| San Ysidro Creek Nature Walk 8am Meet at the Ennisbrook Trailhead, 1700 block San Leandro Lane at the green pump house, Montecito
Join the Montecito Association and noted local biologist John Storrer for an easy walk along San Ysidro Creek via the Ennisbrook Trail. We will meet at the trailhead on San Leandro Road, just west of Crane School for a gentle walk through an enchanted forest.
| We will view birds and other wildlife, discuss issues related to the encroachment of development on creek habitat, and check on the success of habitat restoration efforts.

The Campus Lagoon is a unique body of water fed by stormwater runoff, tidal fluctuations, and salt water from the Marine Science Building. Join in a tour focusing on water quality and the history of the Lagoon.

| Project Clean Water Stakeholders Meeting 3:30 – 5pm Watershed Resource Center, 2981 Cliff Drive at Arroyo Burro Beach County Park
Project Clean Water is hosting a public meeting to present and discuss current issues and programs concerning water quality at our creeks and beaches. This meeting will feature a presentation by Rachel Couch, Project Manager for the California Coastal Conservancy, on the various Conservancy activities taking place in Santa Barbara County. All interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Saturday, September 24th | Bird Watching on Carpinteria Creek 8am Meet the Eighth Street Pedestrian Bridge
Enjoy the riparian habitat of Carpinteria Creek and its resident birds. Walk begins at the bridge and heads south to the sea. Make sure you wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing!

| RESULTS: Thanks to the Los Prietos Boys Camp Crew for planting 9 Coast Live Oaks (Quercus agrifolia) along San Jose Creek! The native trees were generated from seed collected in the San Jose Creek Watershed from a several hundred year old oak (now gone) located in Kellogg Ranch. The trees were grown at the Devereux Greenhouse and Growing Grounds operated by Goleta Valley Beautiful.
