The City of Santa Barbara has a number of different options for reuse, recycling, or disposal of bulky wastes like furniture, appliances, rugs, mattresses, etc. Choose the following links if you live in an apartment or condo, or the waste comes from a business.

Items in Good and Working Condition

The best plan for these materials is reuse. Many people or organizations will pick it up for no cost to you. You might even get paid for it!

Get Paid for Refrigerators and Freezers
Southern California Edison will pick up working 14 cubic feet and larger refrigerators and freezers from their residential customers and pay $35 for them. The person making the appointment must have an electric bill in his/her name with Edison. Call 1-800-234-9722 to make an appointment or visit their website at www.sce.com and click on Rebates and Savings.

Free Advertisements for Sales or Donation
If you have a mattress, rug, or other item in good condition, try advertising it yourself. Place ad in the classified advertising section of local papers, or try the online classifieds at Craigslist.

Donate to a Good Cause
If furniture and appliances are still usable, donate them to a thrift store. Some will even pick up your items. The following stores accept items in good and working condition.

Items Not in Usable Condition

Metal items such as appliances and equipment, plastic furniture, and even porcelain can be recycled. Upholstered furniture is not recyclable. If your upholstered furniture merely looks a little shabby but is otherwise fine, try the free advertising in the previous section to find someone who would find it worth the cost of a slipcover.

Annual Free Bulky Pickup
Each single family home resident that pays a trash/recycling bill is entitled to one unlimited quantity free bulky waste pickup per year by appointment only. You can place furniture, trash, electronics, stoves, washers, dryers, other large appliances, and yardwaste on the curb and your trash hauler will pick it up. The waste must be bundled, bagged, or boxed. No hazardous wastes may be included. Call your service provider before placing items on the curb since you may not be able to get an appointment that week.

Major Appliance Recycling Service (MARS)
MARS will pick up appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, stoves, and televisions at a cost of $10 each. Built-ins, dishwashers, cook tops, water heaters, eye-level stoves, stackable washer/dryers, and televisions over 38 inches cans be picked up for an additional fee. Call 671-9394 or visit their website at www.marsventura.com.

Trash Haulers
If you need more than one bulky pick up in a year, you can pay for pickups by calling either MarBorg or BFI. You can choose either hauler no matter where you live. They have different charges conditions, so call for pricing and terms.

BFI 965-5248
MarBorg 963-1852

1-800-GOT-JUNK
This general waste hauler will pick up furniture, appliances, and any other waste you have for a fee. They recycle as much of the loads as possible. Book online at www.1800gotjunk.com to save $10, or call 1-800-468-5865.

Small Local Haulers
There are many small operators with pickup trucks that will haul furniture and other waste to the Transfer Station. Ask them if they will recycle your load at the MarBorg Construction and Demolition Recycling Facility. (It will be less expensive than the Transfer Station). Check out the "Services" classified advertising section of local papers (see our Classified Ads page for the online version), or try the online classifieds at Craigslist

Self Haul of Bulky Wastes
If you don’t want to wait for your hauler to pick up your materials, bring them to the South Coast Recycling and Transfer Station (the former “dump”) or MarBorg. MarBorg will recycle your materials and the fee is lower than the trash rate at the Transfer Station. Many of the following items can be recycled for free, but you will have to separate them from trash and non-recyclable waste. Follow these links for rate sheets.
