Santa Barbara hazardous waste

Batteries and chemicals must be brought to a disposal facility because they contain chemicals known to endanger both human health and the environment. All of the disposal and recycling facilities are free to residents. Businesses have separate regulations.

Batteries-Household

You can bring just household batteries (not automotive) to many local stores for free. See Battery Dropoff Locations at the businesses where you shop. You can also bring them to the ABOP/Recycling Center along with your motor oil, antifreeeze, latex paint, and recycling. If you also have hazardous chemicals or mercury devices, take the drive to Goleta to bring them to the Community Hazardous Waste Collection Center. The most environemntally friendly solution to battery waste is to buy rechargeable batteries and use them many times before recycling.

Vehicle Batteries, Fluorescent Bulbs, Latex Paint, and Antifreeze

Bring them to the ABOP/Recycling Center along with your recycling. If you also have hazardous chemicals or mercury devices, take the drive to Goleta to bring them to the Community Hazardous Waste Collection Center.

Compact fluorescent bulbs (the kind that screw into an ordinary light bulb socket) can also be placed into a recycling container located on the the Returns desk at Home Depot in Goleta.

Motor Oil

You can recycle motor oil and filters for free! Find the location nearest you in the Used Oil Recycling Brochure. You can also take them to the ABOP.
