Waste Collection Rates: Recycling, Greenwaste, Foodscraps, and Trash

Each year on July 1, the City changes the waste collection rates according to a standard formula specified in the contract with the waste haulers; Allied/BFI and MarBorg Industries. The formula accounts for changes in the cost of picking up waste as measured by the Consumer Price Index and change in the landfill tipping fee for trash.

On June 14, 2011, the City Council approved a rate increase of 3.56 % to the City's current charges for all customer classes, including residential, multi-unit residential and business. Of the total adjustment, 2.72% accounts for an increase in the solid waste “tipping fee” charged by the Tajiguas Landfill and an increase in the amounts paid to the City’s contracted haulers tied to the increase in the Consumer Price Index. The City is contractually obligated to compensate its franchised waste haulers for these increases. An additional  0.84 % increase will cover costs to operate and maintain a landfill gas collection and control system at the Los Positas Landfill, which the City is legally obligated to operate pursuant to State Law. An additional 2.53% increase was also applied to business recycling, greenwaste, and foodscraps services to cover revenue losses stemming from a dramatic decrease in the value of recyclable commodities and an overall downturn in business sector revenues.

Some Recycling and Greenwaste is Included in the Cost of Service

All customers with trash service are entitiled to some recycling and greenwaste at no extra cost. If you need more, you can pay for additional recycling or greenwaste. To get these cost-included services, or to change your service, call your hauler
