How Does it Work?
The City is divided into two zones serviced by BFI and MarBorg. Multi-unit complexes South or West of State Street are serviced by BFI. MarBorg Services complexes north and east of State. See the Trash and Recycling Service Providers Map to determine your hauler. Call your hauler to initiate or change trash, yard waste, or recycling services.

The minimum multi-unit service is 128 gallonsper week (4 cans). Customer that need less than 128 gallons per week must use Single Family Service.
Can or Cart Service (smaller complexes)
You can choose between 32 gallon cans, or 32, 64 or 96 gallon carts. Cans take up more room, but will be serviced from their daily location (backyard service). Carts can store more material in a smaller space, but must be located where the truck can drive up to them. They have wheels and are easy to move, even when full. Cans and carts can be emptied from 1-3 times per week.

96, 64, and 32 Gallon Carts
32 gallon cart = 1 can
64 gallon cart = 2 cans
96 gallon cart = 3 cans

Download the Multi-Unit Residential Rate Sheet for prices and service types.
Cans or Carts
You must purchase your own cans (32 gallons), but carts will be provided by the hauler. If you have a cart, the price for service is based on the equivalent number of 32 gallon cans. Minimum service for multi-unit housing is a flat rate. For more than minimum can/cart service:
Monthly rate = formula rate x number of cans x number of collections per week
Dumpsters
If you have the larger bin service, you will be charged for the trash service and a flat monthly bin rental rate. For trash dumpster service :
Monthly Rate = formula rate x size of bin (yd3) x number of bins x number of collections per week
Extra Trash
Cans or Carts
If you have occasional extra bags or cans of trash, you can pay a $3-4 for an extra pickup on your regular service day. If you need the trash pickup on another day, it will cost around $10. You are entitiled to up to 4 bags or cans of trash for the fee. You must call your hauler at least 24 hours in advance to make arrangements.
Dumpsters
You can get an extra pickup if your dumpster is full before collection day for the same price as regular pickup plus 15%. You must call your hauler at least 24 hours in advance to make arrangements.
Large Items that Don't Fit in the Trash Container
See the section on Furntiure, Appliances, and Bulky Wastes for disposal options.
Debris Boxes or Rolloffs for Large Projects and Cleanups
See the rolloff picture (same as debris box) to decide if you need this type of container. All rolloff box haulers must be permitted by the City of Santa Barbara to haul waste from a Santa Barbara address. These permitted haulers will recycle as much of your waste as possible automatically. You can choose any of the following haulers regardless of who hauls your regular trash. Call to compare prices.

Furniture, appliances, mattresses, toilets, and large items cannot be placed in the garbage dumpsters. These items are often dumped by residents on the streets, and the City Code Enforcement Officer can impose fines on complex management. Your waste hauler can make a special pickup by appointment. The charge for the pickup will be added to the waste and recycling bill and you can pass this cost to the tenant. Please offer this service to your tenants and residents to prevent illegal dumping. You can also the Furniture, Appliances, and Bulky Waste section for other disposal and hauling options.
City Garbage Ordinance
All residences and food serving businesses must have garbage collection service. Property owners also have certain other responsibilities related to garbage storage and collection. Prevent Overflowing Containers from Moving Waste
Moving In
When a tenant is moving in, give them both the Move-In Guide and the Move-Out Guide in case they need to get rid of some stuff that does not fit into their new home. Most of the moving in waste is recyclable boxes and packing paper, so you should discuss the recycling options at the complex with the tenant. You may want to require the tenant to take all boxes and packaging to a recycling center. Flattened boxes will fit into even the smallest cars. If the boxes overwhelm the recycling or trash containers, you can also pay for an extra pickup for trash carts, cans, or dumpsters. Call your hauler for an extra pickup.

Moving Out
When a tenant gives notice for moving, give them a copy of the Move-Out Guide. Most of the move-out waste cannot be put into recycling bins, so if the tenant is unwilling to take the items to local thrift stores, you should expect to have extra trash. Discuss expectations with the tenant at the time they give notice to avoid problems in the often hurried last days of move-out. You can call your hauler for an extra trash pickup in either trash carts/cans or trash dumpsters and it will be charged to your bill. Large items such as furniture and matresses will not be picked up with the regular trash, and it is illegal to put them on the street. Illegal dumping incidents will be investigated, and the property owner can be cited. You can call your hauler at the number above for a special large item pickup and it will be charged to your bill. Minimum charge for large items is about $40. You can also hire someone else to haul your waste. See the Furniture, Appliances, and Bulky Waste section for disposal and hauling options.
