Disposal Laws and Prevention of Illegal Dumping
Electronics don’t belong in trash or recycling bins. It is illegal to put televisions and computer monitors (Cathode Ray Tubes or CRTs) in the trash since they contain hazardous materials. Disposal of non-CRT electronics with hazardous components was banned in February 2006. Please help prevent the release of hazardous chemicals into the environment by using one of the reuse or recycling facilities listed below.
The State passed the Electronic Waste Recycling Act of 2003 that establishes a point of purchase advance recycling fee for all monitors, laptops, and television sold after January 2005. For more information on this program, please see www.ciwmb.ca.gov. Due to this act, commonly called SB 20, recycling of electronics is now free for residents.
Landlords and homeowners associations: download the Electronics Recycling Brochure for easy reference or to distribute to tenants so they know their options.
Collection Service or Dropoff Sites for Electronic Waste
If the item is not broken and still usable, try to give it away. Web-based Craigslist is local, free, easy, and fast. For printed ads (some are free), see the Reuse Directory advertising sources.
If you want collection of electronics from your home or business with no lifting or moving, or want to make sure your harddrive is erased and are willing to pay a nominal fee, collection service is for you. These services will pick up from your house or business, or offer mail-in service. See the tabel below to find collection services.
If you want the lowest cost options and are willing to drive to a drop off point, recycling is free for households, although not necessarily for businesses. The City holds frequent electronic drop off events around town (about every 3 months) which are free to both residents and businesses. Check the What's New section of the homepage for the date of the next event. All harddrives collected during events are destroyed.
There are many dropoff locations for cellphones, or they can be included with other electronics
For phone numbers, locations, or for donation requirements, see the Details About the Recycling Facilities section below the table.
